Police seek hit-run driver who hurt twins

Police believe they know who was driving the car that hit and injured 8-year-old twin sisters before speeding away yesterday in the city's Crescentville section.

Investigators called Shawn Timbers, 22, a "person of interest" in the hit-and-run accident and said they want to speak with him.

Timbers, of the 1200 block of Alcott Street, is a relative of the owner of a gray Lincoln Town Car that struck the girls about 3:40 p.m. on Colgate Street at Cheltenham Avenue, police said.

One of the girls - Kaitlyn Bradfield - remains in critical condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children while her sister Eryca reportedly has been released and gone home.

The car ran over Kaitlyn at her midsection, leaving tire marks on her clothing, and knocked Eryca to the street.

Police said several witnesses ran after the Lincoln, which was going south on Colgate, and were able to get a license plate number.

Investigators tracked the license plate to a car in Northeast Philadelphia matching the witnesses' descriptions and questioned the owner, police said.

The girls live on Cheltenham Avenue near the accident scene and apparently were crossing the street to go to a store, police said.

Police asked anyone with information about Timber's whereabouts to contact Accident Investigations at 215-685-3180.

What kind of individual could live with themselves driving away after doing something as heinous as this. I wish the children a speedy recovery, and hope the person responsible for this is caught.

I'll be curious to learn why the driver ran.

Probably toasted on alcohol or pot is the reason he or she did not stop.

This is horrible and whomever hit these little girls has to be held accountable. However, I wonder what two second-graders were doing walking and crossing streets by themselves? In an earlier article, the mother said they each received a dollar from their father and "probably walked to the store to spend their money". Um, what do you mean "probably"? You didn't know where your 8 yr olds were and didn't offer supervision? There is no doubt that the children are not at fault and the person responsible for hitting them and fleeing is totally responsible. That being said, when are parents going to take responsibility for supervising their own children? Remember the mother who's child drowned because she was napping? (with 7 children and no one watching them) How often do parents say, "he/she was a good kid" only to find they rarely supervised their child? May God bless those little girls and I hope Kaitlyn pulls through.

Hitting the girls may not have even been his fault. So often people get themselves in trouble simply by leaving the scene, which is a separate crime even if the accident was not the fault of the driver. In any event, I cannot imagine being so selfish. I guess people like that think "Well. There are other people around help so me leaving is o.k." But it is not.

"There is no doubt that the children are not at fault and the person responsible for hitting them and fleeing is totally responsible." How do you know that? How do you know that, say, they didn't run out into the street from between two parked cars, leaving the driver insufficient chance to stop? Of course, that doesn't excuse leaving the scene. But if you are going to post such a bold statement you should back it up with facts.

Umm, if he (or she) hit them, then they are totally responsible! It may (or may not) be a criminal act, but responsibility rests on the object making contact. Check with your insurance company. That's a fact! You're not suggesting that the girls ran into the car. Are you?

Lori, it wasn't the mother who said they received money, it was their aunt who had just dropped them off and her husband gave them the money. The little girl's dad was not home at the time of the accident.

None of the news stories noted that the corner bodega where the girls were heading is the same one where the owner was murdered by a neighborhood thug about a year or two ago. Crescentville used to be a solid, safe working-class neighborhood but no more, not since it got Section 8'd.

Why the driver ran? Because it takes guts to face a tough situation like this, and this individual is proving that he is totally gutless.

Wow. What a surprise. How convenient that the police already have a mugshot of him. New DA Williams will probably ask for probation.

I say we strap this thug to the ground and run him over a few times with a steamroller. Sounds fair, right?
