DUI crackdown in Bucks, Montco this weekend

Police are cracking down on impaired driving for the Fourth of July holiday period, with TEAM DUI officers posted in many Southeastern Pennsylvania this weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.

From tomorrow until Monday, they include:

Buckingham Township, Bucks County. Police will conduct roving DUI patrols.

Bensalem, Bristol, Falls and Middletown Townships, Bucks County. Police will conduct joint checkpoint and roving enforcement on Routes 1, 13, and 132 (Street Road).

Abington and Upper Moreland Townships, Montgomery County: Police will jointly conduct roving DUI patrols on Route 611.

In Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties, there were 87 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in 2007, about 27 percent of the 319 total highway deaths in the region, PennDot said.

PennDot's impaired driving program is made up of police officers from numerous municipalities, state police and other law enforcement agencies. Police receive grant funds from PennDot to pay the officers overtime for conducting DUI enforcement.

Additionally, PennDot said, police have kicked off a wave of Smooth Operator enforcement, which will run through Monday. Motorists will be ticketed and fined for aggressive driving such as speeding, tailgating, running red lights and weaving through traffic. During the previous enforcement blitz in April, nearly 60,000 citations and arrests were recorded.    - Inquirer staff
