‘Checkmate Violence’ chess marathon starts today

A "Checkmate Violence" 24-hour chess marathon begins today at Temple University's Gittis Student Activity Center, 13th Street and Montgomery Avenue.

Students from the ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge will raise money for their individual chess clubs while spotlighting the importance of chess as an anti-violence activity.

Mayor Nutter will help kick off the event, sponsored by Peco Energy Co., at 6 p.m.
