Powerball rises to $179 million
So far, those West Virginia sharers of a $139 million cash payout are the only ones to claim a Powerball jackpot in 2008.
Officials are still waiting to hear from whoever has the Louisiana ticket that hit the $97 million annuity jackpot in January.
And nobody won the current Powerball bonanza last night.
The biggest winners were eight tickets - including one sold in Delaware - that matched the first five numbers (1, 17, 25, 43 and 51) but not the Powerball (38).
They won $200,000 each, since none of them had the Power Play option, which would have tripled their winnings.
As a result, Saturday's annuity jackpot will be $179 million, or $87.3 million in cash.
That's the multistate lottery's second biggest prize since August, when a single Indiana ticket hit one of Powerball's largest jackpots ever. It was worth $314 million in yearly installments, but the winners took the $146 million cash.
Before taxes, of course.
Powerball is played in more than two dozen states, including Pennsylvania.
Tomorrow night, over in New Jersey (and 11 other states), $100 million is on the line in Mega Millions, the other major multistate lottery.
