Anchors Stensland and Mendte lead a wild life
Stensland, of Fox29, said the family's German shepherd, Buddy, found the raccoon in the woods near the couple's Chestnut Hill home Saturday morning. "This is a 140-pound dog and he carried it gingerly in his mouth and left it on the deck," said Stensland.
She said she put on gloves and tried to feed it with an eye dropper, and then placed it back in the wild, hoping the mother would return.
After awhile, Mendte, of CBS3, put the raccoon in a box and drove it to the Schuylkill Center (www.schuylkillcenter.org) in Roxborough, an environmental education center that has a wildlife rehabilitation center.
Center staff confirmed that Mendte brought in the critter, which is believed to have been orphaned or abandoned and not removed from its nest. It was uninjured. Stensland said Buddy must have sensed its distress.
A center staff member said Mendte also left a donation, which she declined to specify.
Staff was nursing the raccoon with Pedialyte electrolyte solution, commonly used to treat children who are dehydrated.
Stensland, who keeps Pedialyte on hand because the couple's two sons are young, said she didn't realize she could use it on a raccoon.
The raccoon was resting comfortably Sunday in an incubator.
