Suspect identified in the shooting of Lance Haver's son

As Daren Dieter lies paralyzed from the neck down, police yesterday said they had identified the gunman who shot him at point-blank range last month.

They said Tyree Bohannon, 21, of the 6500 block of North Fairhill Street in East Oak Lane, pulled the trigger. Dieter, 24, an aspiring artist, was shot Sept. 22 in the parking lot of a bar close to Bohannon's home.

Hoping that someone knows his whereabouts, police released an old mugshot of Bohannon and asked anyone with information to call 911 or Northwest Detectives at 215-685-2838.

Dieter, whose father, Lance Haver, is the city's consumer advocate, remains in intensive care at Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he is on life support to help him breathe.

Police and family members said they still do not know why he was shot. Haver, who has lobbied legislators to strengthen gun laws, said criminals in this state can too easily obtain weapons.

"The only thing that would have made Daren safe was if that handgun was not in that person's hand," Haver said.

Capt. Mark Everitt of Northwest Detectives said there is no indication that Bohannon knew Dieter and that detectives were still trying to determine what led to the shooting.

Bohannon, police say, shot Dieter in the neck and chest while Dieter was sitting in a car in the parking lot of Shrimpie's Bar at 1910 Cheltenham Ave.

The shooting was recorded by surveillance cameras. On Friday, police released a tape to reporters and asked for the public's help in identifying the gunman.

On the surveillance tape, the gunman is seen going in and out of the bar, and talking with patrons and security guards.

Police said Dieter and Elina Henry, whom he had been dating for about a month, had pulled into the lot about 11 p.m. She stayed in the car while Dieter went to Shrimpie's to order takeout at a walk-up window.

About 11:15, Dieter returned to the car, a Nissan Maxima, and was about to pull out when the gunman approached the driver's side.

Police said Henry does not recall what they were talking about and did not remember hearing an argument. Dieter, because of his injuries, has not been able to provide detailed information to police. He has been communicating with his family by blinking to spell out words.

Henry was treated at the hospital for a wound to the arm by one of the bullets that passed through Dieter.

Everitt said investigators received information from different sources that led them to Bohannon.

Police said Bohannon is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, firearms violations and related offenses.

Court records show Bohannon has been arrested three times in the last two years on numerous charges, including robbery, assault, firearms violations, receiving stolen property, and providing false identification to police.

He has been convicted only of false identification and was placed in a program for first-time offenders after his arrest last November.
