N.J. amusement facilities report no big injuries

TRENTON - New Jersey's amusement industry had its first summer free of major injuries in more than a decade.

The state Codes and Standards Division says there have been 147 minor injuries this year at amusement parks, carnivals and other similar attractions.

The Statehouse bureau of the Star-Ledger of Newark and the Record of Bergen County says that's down from 155 last year, when there were also six serious injuries requiring hospital care.

There have not been any deaths to patrons at the parks since a 14-year-old Philadelphia girl drowned at the end of a water slide at Gillian's Island Water Park in Ocean City in 2005.

Amusement operators say that serious injuries are often caused by out-of-control guests.
