USF Holland Inc. is closing its Philadelphia truck terminal on April 3 and will lay off the 72 employees there during the two weeks after that.

The transportation company, based in Holland, Mich., said the step was aimed at cutting costs and becoming more efficient to maintain competitiveness in the industry.

"The closing is the result of business circumstances and economic conditions that were not foreseeable until very recently," USF Holland said in a notice to the state.

Some non-union Philadelphia workers may be offered transfers to other company locations.

Customers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey now will be served largely by New Penn, which, like USF Holland, is a subsidiary of YRC Worldwide Inc., USF Holland said.
