Morphotek in research deal with German university

Biopharma company Morphotek Inc. says it has signed an evaluation agreement with the University Hospital Heidelberg in Germany for work on developing oncology therapeutic antibodies.

The Exton company, which became a subsidiary of Eisai Corp. of North America (itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Eisai Co. Ltd.) in March 2007, said it will provide a research grant to the university and the National Center for Tumor Diseases, which was founded, in part, by the university.

Morphotek, in turn, would receive biological materials to use in its work.

The amount of the grant was not disclosed.

"We are very pleased to be collaborating with one of the world's leading research and clinical centers in oncology," said Nicholas Nicolaides, president and CEO of Morphotek.

He said that Morphotek's collaboration would advance the company's goal of developing medicine to treat various cancers.
