PW District 1 seed

QWhat seed do you think PW will end up with for Districts? Do they have a shot at states?
Jim, Plymouth Meeting, PA  02/01/08
AAs of Wednesday, Plymouth Whitemarsh was the 14th seed. But that was before last night's games. I'm not sure what the Colonials' current seed is.  Anything is possible, but I don't see P. W. reaching the state tournament this season.

Playoff Date

QWhen do the 2007-2008 District 1 playoffs begin? Do you still feel that Chester, Pennsbury, and Norristown are the top three seeds in that order?
Steve, East Norriton, PA  02/01/08
AI' m assuming that you are asking about the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs. They start on Feb. 8. And yes, I believe Chester, Pennsbury and Norristown will be the top three seeds.

District 1 Possible Seeding

QHow do you see the seeding coming out of District One for Boys Basketball.
I see Chester, Pennsbury, Norristown as the top three, and in that order. However, friends say they've heard it might be Chester, Norristown, followed by Pennsbury. I know as of this date Norristown is undefeated, and that's no small feat, but against common opponents the Pennsbury team won by wider margins and has only one lost to a team from Oklahoma.(A team with a fabulous point guard named Wade I believe)
I'm just wondering what your thoughts on this might be. But then in the end the cream will rise to the top. I hope to see your answer soon
Buddy, Morrisville, PA  01/31/08
A

You are correct. I've been told that Chester will nab the top seed, followed by Pennsbury and Norristown.  Pennsbury's lone loss did come to the Xavier Henry-led Putnum City squad. Henry, a 6-foot-6 guard, is the nation's second-best recruit in the Class of 2009, according to Rivals.com.  Pennsbury's statement win came against Lower Merion, a team in the running for the fourth seed.

Pub Player of Year

QWho would you say are the five finalists for Public League player of the year?
And, who would you give it to if the season ended today?
Ex-Pub Great, new castle, DE  01/30/08
A

Communication Tech's Scootie Randall, Bartram's Novar Gadson, Paul Robeson's Brandon Penn, Frankford's Malik Tinsley and Strawberry Mansion's Dwayne Davis are my five finalists. I really like Overbrook's Nurideen Lindsey. He's averaging over 30 points a game. It's just hard to make him a finalist when his squad is riding a nine-game losing streak.

Scootie Randall would be my player of the year no matter when the season ended.

No one does it better!

QKeith, you are the man when it comes to high school sports in Philly. I really appreciate the refreshing insights that you give. Its good to hear from someone who has a new-school perspective along with the much needed old-school foundation. Keep up the good work...

Brandon Penn

QWhat do you think about the kid Brandon Penn? Does he have any weaknesses in his game?
The Land, Scotland, PA  01/30/08
A

Brandon Penn is a fine player. He is unquestionably one of the Public League’s standouts. Standing 6-foot-6, the senior swingman usually has a height advantage over opposing guards. He’s a great scorer that loves to attack the basket. Penn had a few unforced turnovers when I saw him play. But that only happened when he tried to force things. The Rider recruit’s best basketball is ahead of him.

Roman Catholic

QAre you familiar with Roman Catholics team...I mean of course there's the starters but they have to promising young guys in Rakeem Brookins and Aaron Brown but then there's this one soph. that I seen in AAU ball over the summer that they have named Quasim Jones but he's not getting that much playing time. He's ranked 14th in the state in the class of 2010. What do you think is the meaning behind why he's not being used?
KJTHEKID, Philadelphia, PA  01/30/08
A

Having experienced guards ahead of him has a lot to do with it. Junior Maalik Wayns (a Villanova recruit) and senior Courtney Stanley (Loyola-Chicago) are one of the better guard tandems in Southeastern Pennsylvania.  Wayns is recognized as one of the nation's premier point guards regardless of class. He even backed up Doodles Sims two seasons ago. More often than not, the Roman Catholic way is to wait your turn.  How can you argue with that formula when the Cahillites have produced five McDonald's All-Americans and won 28 Catholic League titles?

Top 10 Female Freshman Pt. Guards

QWho are the top 10 female freshman pt. guards in the city and suburbs.
Nice, phila, PA  01/29/08
A

Rick O'Brien is our girls' basketball writer. He would be the right person to answer that question.  But, I do know that Brittany Hrynko of Engineering and Science, Nyderra Lee of Prep Charter, Tiffany Johnson of Cheltenham and Devin Gold of Council Rock North are all very good freshmen point guards.

good/bad

Qwhat assessment would you make of Shante Evans and where would you rank her with the top players in s.e pa.
Anonymous, PA  01/29/08

I'm a Shante Evans' fan. In fact, she reminds me of Charles Barkley when he played for the Sixers. One of my most memorable Evans' performances came against Garnet Valley in a Garnet Valley Varsity Club Holiday Invitational game in December. The junior tallied 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead West Chester Henderson to a 44-43 victory. In my opinion, she is one of the area's top basketball players.

Prep Charter

QHaving seen Prep Charter play recently, I was wondering if you have any insight as to how they can be stopped. They appear to have a total package; size, speed, experience. Any ideas?
Big Mike, lewisburg, PA  01/28/08
AThat's a hard question to answer. The Huskies have the total package. Prep Charter has stellar guards, dominant forwards and an improved big man to go with a deep bench. The scary thing is that the two-time defending Class AA state champion Huskies may be more prepared for the state tournament than in past seasons. And that's saying a lot, considering Prep Charter lost Kansas signees and twin brothers Marcus and Markieff Morris.
