Ask Andy Martino
QWhy don't the Phillies recruit in Latin American countries or go after more quality Latin players in trades or free agency? Just look at the rosters of the better team in MLB and you will find latin player that are part of their core teams. (Manny, Ortiz, Lowell, Rivera, Posada, Vlad, Escobar, Pudge, Ordonez, Guillen, Reyes, Delgado, Alou, Beltran)
AThe Phillies actually have baseball academies in Venezuela and Dominican Republic. They're one of a handful of teams that have both.
QEveryone's always writing in saying "convert Iguchi to 3B" or "convert Burrell to 3B", and you always give 'em the obvious answer; I don't know why they keep doing it. But here's one I just thought of, though I have no clue whether any of the three players would be interested. The Phils have too many centerfielders. Would one of THEM perhaps be a candidate for a 3B conversion? As OFs, they obviously all have the arm. As CFs, they all have the athleticism. The only real question would be, do they have the quickness and the desire? Such a move would allow them to keep Rowand because they wouldn't need to find a 3B; they could pay Lowell's (or someone else's) money to Rowand. Yes, I know it's not just "OK, convert him"; playing 3B is not that easy. But you know these guys; is it worth a thought? Cheers,
AI don't see that happening. You very, very, very rarely see an outfielder converted into an infielder. Rowand and Victorino are athletic, but third base at the big-league is such a difficult position I'm not sure anybody would even take that chance.
QIf the Phillies make contract and/or arbitration offers to Rowand, Lohse, and Iguchi, but lose all three to more generous offers, would they get three more first round draft picks? I'm assuming all three of those players would rate as "A" players at their positions.
ADepending on where they rank, yes, they would receive draft picks for them. I expect them to offer arbitration to Rowand, Romero and Lohse for sure. I'm not sure about Iguchi.
QTodd, nice article re A-Rod not being a good fit for Philly. I agree, especially given that we have proven that we can get to the postseason. What we now need are clutch performers in the postseason (certainly NOT A-rod!). On that note, what do you think of the world series MVP third baseman, Lowell, coming to Philly?
AI think the Phillies will make an effort to sign him, but it sounds like the Red Sox want him back. I can't blame them. But there could be other options for the Phillies should Lowell resign in Boston. Like Hank Blalock in Texas, for example.
Qdo u think the Phils will go after anyone of the 3 free agents Bonds, A-Rod, or El-duque. I think bonds would do great in this park
AI don't see them going after any of them. In fact, I think they've already said no to Bonds. They just said no to A-Rod. And I'm not sure how much they'd want El Duque. They're more interested in Schilling.
QOk I know this is a long shot, but what are the odds of the phillies looking into A-ROD? He can play third base and his hitting would definitley compliment Utley and Howard..
A
Zero chance.

QHi Todd. If events of the offseason lead to either resigning Rowand and trading Vicorino for pitching or letting Rowand walk and keep Victorino, which player do think is more important to the Phillies? I think Victorino will end up being the better player. Thanks
AGood question. If I had to guess right now, I don't see Rowand resigning. But I don't think they can trade Victorino at that point, unless they think Bourn is ready to be an everyday player. But I like Victorino because of his speed and defense.
QCan Romero close? If he can, it would justify paying him more. Madson and Gordon could set up, and Myers could return to the rotation.
A
I don't think that's an option. If he returns, it'll be in the same role ... as a situational/setup guy.
QNow that the World Series is over, what do you think the Phils' first move will be?
AI think they'd like to resign Romero, but I'm not sure that's going to happen. Things have just started so it's difficult to say.
QI hope the Phillies don`t go after Schilling or Lowell.I would rather see them resign Rowand and Romero and possibly going after Atkins and Santana.
AIf Schilling really would take a one-year contract, I'd definitely be interested in him. I think he has enough for one more season. I'd take that chance. He's won three World Series, and if he's pitching well is the type of guy that can get a team over the hump.
