QWhat do you see the Phils doing with the remainder of the off season? If they are going to add a starter, does that mean they are prepared to eat the rest of Eaton's money or make a similar move to the one they made with Lieber at the beginning of last season? Also, do you think they are going to go with an OF of Werth, Victorino, Burrell, or are they going to add someone like Fukodome from Japan. The Lidge move was a good one, but I am concerned about them banking on Helms/Dobbs and Romero. Recall that Dobbs and Romero (who was incredibly overpaid for 30 good innings) were both waiver pickups. What do the Phils have up there sleeves to make this team into a world series contender, because unless they do something big, I just don't see it happening.
Coop, State College, PA  11/12/07
A

I wrote about their offseason plans today: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20071113_Phillies_looking_for_more_arms.html

Andy Martino
QHey Todd! What do you think about keeping Myers as the closer, having Lidge be the setup man, and trading for another starter (i.e. Garland or Willis)? I know Lidge makes a lot of money, but a bullpen with Myers, Lidge, Romero, Madson, and Gordon would become the strength of the team.
Ray, Washington  11/11/07
AIt would be solid, but from what I gather the Phillies just don't have the personnel necessary to trade for somebody like Garland or Willis. Their cupboard is pretty bare.
Andy Martino
QWhat ever happened to Julio Mateo? I have not seen any updates and wondered whether he will be following in Ugueth Urbina's footsteps or expected to be with the club in 2008.
Anonymous, Morristown, NJ  11/11/07
AMateo is supposed to be on trial for allegedly assaulting his wife Dec. 18 in New York. If he's acquitted, I expect him to be part of their plans.
Andy Martino
QGood move re-signing Romero. There are a number of good FA relief guys still left. Linebrink would be my #1 pick and other names, Dotel, Hawkins and Herges to name a few. Who do you think the Phils may go after?
Rich, Reading, PA  11/11/07
AHawkins, Mahay, Linebrink would be interesting. But Linebrink is a Type A free agent. I absolutely would not sign him and forfeit a top pick in the process. If Milwaukee non-tenders him -- meaning the Phillies wouldn't lose a pick for signing him -- then I'd make a run at him.
Andy Martino
QI know you won't answer this question, but I'll ask it anyway. Why is it that you and Jim Salsbury constantly make excuses for the Phillies? You both constantly say things like, If they sign this pitcher and that pitcher they will be "unable" to re-sign Aaron Rowand. You both know damn well "unable" has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with it. The correct word is UNWILLING. Don't tell me about how much their payroll is. They have had about the same payroll since they moved in to citizens bank park and they have consistently not had enough to go to the World Series (that should be the goal, not just make the playoffs and keep attendance up). This means you need to spend more and spend it wisely. You need to realize (and you're a moron if you don't) that players will get injured. So what the Phillie$ spend $95 million? It obviously takes at least a little more than that, so spend $110 million and keep AARON ROWAND!!! You two are obviously intimidated by the Phillies and refuse to call them on this. Instead you simply write how it is a priority to re-sign Charlie Manuel (let's face it, it's a stretch to even say he's a decent manager, but you're definitely too intimidated by him and the access that would be denied you if you criticize him). Do your jobs, stop being gutless and call the Phillie$ on why they are "unable" to re-sign one of the major reasons they went to the playoffs AND improve the club.
Anonymous, Blue Bell, PA  11/10/07
AMy job as the Phillies' beat writer is to write about the reality of the situation as best as possible. If a columnist wants to call the Phillies cheap, that's their right. That's their job. My job is to write about what the Phillies have to spend, and how they plan to spend it. Like it or not, the Phillies have a budget. It should be around $105 million next season. That leaves the Phillies with about $10 million more to spend on players outside their system. And believe me, I've asked the Phillies about their budget countless times. Seriously, countless times. Here's their answer: "We have a budget we have to work with. Would we love to spend more? Yes. But we have a BUDGET." I guess I could ask that question every day for the rest of my life, but I'm not sure what it would accomplish. It's funny, but the Rockies and Indians made thier respective league championsihp series' with two of the lowest payrolls in baseball. Maybe this is the question you should be asking: Are the Phillies spending their money wisely? Hey, if they hadn't committed $14 million next season to Pat Burrell and $7.635 million next season to Adam Eaton, they would have enough money to re-sign Aaron Rowand. As far as being intimidated ... if you only knew how many times Salisbury and I have ticked off people with the Phillies for asking questions they don't want to be asked.

QApparently, the Phils aren't high on Kyle Lohse. It seems that he pitched well for them. What do you think?
Kevin, Chesapeake, VA  11/09/07
AThey like him. He's just going to cost too much. And right now, they only have about $10 million more to commit to next season's payroll.
Andy Martino
QDo you think that it would be wise to go after LaTroy Hawkins? He seems to have pretty good stuff, at least when he pitches against the Phils. Or are the Phils done shopping for relief pitchers? Also seems as though they are unfortunately satisfied with the platoon at third base, so are they done looking for someone there.
Curt C, Chambersburg, PA  11/09/07
AI think you could see the Phillies go after Hawkins. They're still looking for another bullpen arm. He would be one to watch.
Andy Martino
QKyle Loche is listed as a no compensation player on ESPN. Is this correct?
SS, Dallas, TX  11/09/07
AThat is correct. The only player that might sign elsewhere that would net the Phillies some picks is Aaron Rowand. He's a Type A free agent, meaning the Phillies would get two picks for losing him. Freddy Garcia is a Type B free agent, but the Phillies aren't going to offer him salary arbitration, so they won't get anything if he signs elsewhere.
Andy Martino
QIf the Cubs do not sign Prior. Do you think the phillis might have any interest. Even though he is very injury prone, he could be a good hig-risk/high-reward guy who could help the phillies during a playoff stretch run. If he'd sign for a one-year contract.
Anonymous, New York, NY  11/08/07
AI think the Phillies would have interest should Prior be non-tendered by the Cubs. Keep an eye on that one.
Andy Martino
QWhich Pat Burrell will we get in 2008? The April/May Pat or the guy who caught fire the rest of the year?
John, Malvern, PA  10/31/07
ABurrell actually had three good months this season and three terrible months. He hit .292 in April, .435 in July and .290 in August. But he hit .179 in May, .129 in June and .209 in September. That's why I think the Phillies will need to do something should Rowand leave. That would leave Burrell as the only everyday righthanded bat in the lineup, other than Ruiz/Coste. Manuel talks about balance in his lineup. I'm not sure the Phillies can count on Burrell for that.
