QRomero's new contract is said to be $12 million for 3 years with a 4th year option. Can you advise the year by year details?
Dick, Allentown, PA  11/13/07
A

From what I understand he's making $3 million in 2008, $4 million in 2009 and $4 million in 2010. There's a signing bonus and buyout of his 2011 club option that totals $1 million.

QMy son needs the same kind of batting glove that Chase Utly wore after he broke his hand.. Where can he get one like that? We looked on the internet, but can't find a batting glove with padding to protect a broken bone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Anonymous, wilmington, DE  11/12/07
AThat's a good question. I actually would e-mail the Phillies to see if they can help.

QI believe Iguchi is a type "A" free agent, did we offer him that way we get compensation for him when he signs elsewhere? I believe it would be a good risk. And do you think it is possible to go after Rivera or Cordero as a closer and put Lidge as a setup man? We traded for Lidge and he is gone after a year anyways. I think that would be a solid back end of the bullpen with Madson,Romero,Gordon,Lidge, and Cordero or Rivera.
Brian P., McDonald, TN  11/12/07
AThe Phillies can't offer him arbitration, as part of his original contract with the White Sox. So the Phillies receive no compensation once Iguchi signs with another team. As far as making Lidge a setup man, it's not going to happen. He's the closer.
Andy Martino
QTwo things. I asked earlier about possible draft picks and I appreciated your answer, but I obviously don't get the rating system. How can Iguchi not be AT LEAST a "B" player at 2nd base? Hi 700s OPS, great defense, moves runners well. How is that a "C"? Second, if he is really a C, is there any chance of Utley moving to 3rd and keeping Iguchi to play second base? Utley has the athleticism, but I'm not sure about the arm. Then we could move Helms for more bullpen help.

A

First, nobody understands that rating system. It often doesn't seem to make sense. Second, there's no chance Utley is moving to third.

QAfter reading that the Orioles are making available their entire roster, would it make sense to inquire about Melvin Mora - 3B and bats right? I completely understand the focus is pitching, and that the team will take a "hit" offensively when acquiring FA or making further signings, but why not? I know, I know, 8 mil a year and what would we (the Phils of course) offer them in return? By the way, nice scoop on the Romero signing, any word of future deals?
Spencer, Philadelphia, PA  11/12/07
AIt doesn't sound like it's in their plans. In conversations I've had recently, the Phillies are focusing their remaining money into pitching. That means a big money contract for a third baseman or centerfielder is very unlikely. Could it still happen? Sure. It could. But I wouldn't bet on it. As far as future moves, I think things will play out a little more slowly. Nothing seems imminent.
Andy Martino
QAny chance the Phillies try to sign Andruw Jones to a one-year contract. Jones has already said he'd interested in a short deal for a contender. It seems that CBP would be perfect for him to re-establish himself for the next free agent market and if he bounced back at all, he'd make the Phils deadly.
Anonymous, New York, NY  11/12/07
A

Here's what I've learned covering players: what they say about their contract status and what ends up happening rarely is the same. Sure, Jones might have said that. But if Boras can get him a multiyear offer from somebody, I'm betting he will go there. Regardless, I don't see the Phillies going after Jones. They want pitching.

QWho do you feel will be our 3B in 2008? Do you believe they're looking at Free Agents or are they satisfied with a platoon situation with say Dobbs and Nunez?
Mark B. , Harrisburg, PA  11/12/07
AWell, Nunez won't be back. So they're looking at Dobbs, Helms and Bruntlett at third. Do I like it? Well, that basic combo last season had the lowest OPS of third basemen in the National League. Helms was a disappointment. He needs to be better.

QHats off to the phils for winning their division ! now thats out of the way i have one thing to say and please use your writing influence to their management to KEEP ROWAND !!! no matter how much pitching they manage to get if they let him go it will be their BIGGEST mistake of the offseason - an engine needs a spark - and he's it - just ask the SOX !!!!
jimimack, jacksonville beach, NJ  11/12/07
AI think they should re-sign Rowand. I do. But if I'm the Phillies, I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $60 million over five years for him. Right now, it doesn't seem like Rowand is in the Phillies' plans. And unfortunatley, I don't have much pull in the front office: :)
Andy Martino
QWhat's going to happen with Scott Mathieson? What do the Phils expect from him? Is he a real prospect that just got injured or is he only a long shot to become an average middle reliever?
Tom, New Brunswick, NJ  11/12/07
AI talked with Ruben Amaro Jr. about Mathieson on Saturday. He said while they expected Mathieson to be physically ready to pitch once the season starts, they think developmentally he will be behind. He has missed more than a year recovering from Tommy John surgery. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mathieson open the season in triple-A and join the Phillies at some point during the season. But they were looking forward to having him help in the bullpen before he suffered a setback in September. He was throwing hard. If he can continue to throw hard for strikes, I think they think he could be effective.
Andy Martino
QIf the Phills dont sign Rowand who will hit behind Howard? If they don't sign a strong threat Ryan wont see many pitches to hit.
Don Whitman, Delray Beach , FL  11/12/07
A

I think that's overrated. But for the moment, I'm guessing Burrell will be hitting fifth.
