QDon what aspect of A-Rod's record as a winner would make us believe that he is worth $30M+ per year? He is certainly a great individual player, but his record as a winner is dismal. It seems like the Phillies greatest need is pitching that can win consistently.
Joe, Havertown, PA  07/22/07
AAs I said in the column, signing ARod would make no sense economically and won't happen.  thanx, dm

QA-rod? No way Jose'! there's a reason why this franchise has 1 world series appearance in 23 years, bad management and ownership. It would be exciting to have him but, lets get some pitching and perhaps we will make it to the series and win 1. We have the best offensive and D nucleus since the Heightens of the Ruly Carpenter years.
Jorge, Leesburg, VA  07/22/07
ARight now the Phillies have one pitcher, needless to say Cole Hamels.  If Brett Myers comes back they'll have 1 1/2.  The World Series is not on the horizon until they can develop more internally, which has been this team's Achilles Heel since WWII.  Buying big name pitchers rarely works and almost never has worked here.

QDon, The Flyers really stepped up this summer in Free-Agency. Paul Holmgren did an excellent job bringing in quality veteran players. Is John Stevens the right man to coach this team? Stevens seems like a good guy, I wish him well, however, can he take this team to the next level?

Hi Mike!

If the "next level" means making the playoffs, absolutely yes.

If "next level" means winning the Cup, we shall see.

QHi Don, I was wondering what your feelings on the Yi Jianlian situation are. His national team is "blocking" his move to the Bucks. What is this about? Will he play in the NBA next year for a different team? Also, I was wondering if you had any updates on our draft picks and how they have been performing, since the summer league isn't extremely advertised. Thanks.

The manager of Yi's team in China said on Wednesday that his priority is getting players ready for the Chinese National Team and the Beijing Olympics in 2008, not helping the NBA.  He said he wants Yi with a team where he will play everyday and develop.

Milwaukee has two active big men, including former No. 1 pick Andrew Boghut. Yi won't play there. However, Philadelphia has NO big inside players who would block Yi from playing time here.  So stay tuned.

QDon, Durbin,Happ,Condrey,Mesa,Alfonseca,Geary,Eaton,Rosario,Hernandez,Segovia,A.Garcia,F.Garcia,Smith and Castro! Also, it looks like the last five teams Moyer has faced can hit 80 mph fastballs. Not to mention ,the teams two best relief pitchers have missed significant time to injury. And don't get me started on Pat Burrell. The fact that Manuel has this team at .500 is incredible. The blame should go to the people who are providing him with this slop to run out to the mound. Not Manuel. Your thoughts?
Mike, Ambler, PA  07/17/07
A

I have said that consistently for at least a year, both on the radio and in the sunday paper.  Unfortunately the hatred of Manuel is so fanatical and so pervasive I have found few (if any) who agree with you.  One national publication said Manuel should be the manager of the year.  While I assign Manuel no particular credit (I think the team would be at .500 with or without him) I also assign him no particular blame.  Unfortunately, that's a minority position.  thanx, dm

QIDon, Isn't the Eagles organization being a little too optimistic about McNabb recovery? It was a serious injury on top of other serious innjuries and old Donnie isn't getting any younger. I think McNabb's will look very rusty in the begining of the season and only slowly improve as the season progresses and his health holds up. Wouldn't it be better to start AJ until McNabb is fully recovered? If Mc Nabb gets hurt again it really could effect his career and the Eagles chnaces for the next several years. Oh yea tell people to take a pill Kolb, isn't the guy this year.
Iggleman (in VA), Reston , VA  07/16/07
AI don't think anyone is expressing any undue optimism.  As far as I know the plan IS to play AJ until McNabb's ready.  I personally don't think you'll see McNabb until after the bye week, and if AJ has the team 4-0 at that point, I don't think you'll see him then, either.  Signing AJ to a two-year contract was expressly to provide insurance against a slow McNabb recovery.   thanx, dm

QDon, a few weeks ago on your show, 2 callers stated, "Why dont the Phillies owners sell the team to Pat Croce". What is the obsession with Croce that everytime a Philly team is in the dumps, the fans want him as an owner? Also, why would the owners sell the team if they are making a profit? That is the puprose of a business. Of course the fans and I think the owners want a championship but is Pat Croce the answer?
RollingStone, Phila, PA  07/11/07
A

Hi Gimme:

Pat Croce is one of the outstanding motivators and practioners of positive thinking in recent history, and he married himself to the Philadelphia fans with his outstanding, "fan friendly" stewardship of the 76ers in the late 1990s.  He would be a marvelous addition to any ownership group in any sport for exactly that reason -- the fans would believe in him.

But once he assumed stewardship, he would have the same problem as the current ownership -- a lack of pitching in a sport that depends almost totally on pitching.  Whether he could acquire that priceless commodity and whether the pitchers would perform when they got here is another question.

thanx, dm

QDon The Phillies should be "Sellers" and not "Buyers" at the July 31st trade dead-line. Pat Gillick needs to sign Relief Pitching this winter, and the more money at his disposal the better. Besides Aaron Rowand, is there anyone else to trade to acquire a young Pitcher in return?
Mike, Lansdale, PA  07/08/07
A

Hi Mike:

Here's a theory that hasn't been considered yet, which I'm gonna write about soon.  Since the Phillies have virtually nothing to trade in the non-star category, how about trading some of the stars?  If you traded Aaron Rowand for a good reliever, that would be a plus. If you traded one of the star infielders for two pitchers, that would be another plus.

Then you would have (presumably) Hamels, the two new guys, Jamie Moyer and Adam Eaton in the rotation.  You would have the new reliever as a setup man and Myers as the closer.   You could keep Kyle Kendrick for spot starts and as the long guy if the closer blows the save. If one or two of the guys like Geary, Alfonseca, Madson, Castro, etc., pitches well in spring training, keep him.  If not, release the whole bunch.

You'll also have the possible return of Mathieson, who was okay last year and might still develop. There also are a few other young arms out there like Zagurski and two kids from Reading named Carrasco and Maloney.

THAT would be a good pitching staff, and all you'd have to give up is a player you'll lose anyway (Rowand) and one infielder.

thanx,dm

QManuel is a nice guy, but not for managing the team. He is not outspoken enough and can't inspire the players. I know it is the fault of the pitching staff, but he is the one who pulls out and puts in pitchers during a game and is not doing well in that particular aspect of the game.
Mary, Sarasota, FL  07/08/07

Hi Mary:

Keep this in mind:  any move by any manager is held hostage to the performance of the player.  If the manager inserts a reliever and he does the job, it's a good move.  If he fails, fans consider it a poor move.  The manager's move is identical:  what changes is the performance of the player.  The Phillies relievers can't do the job.  That's not the fault of the manager.

I thought Manuel was terrible for two seasons because he did what Bowa and Francona did:  use the so-called "book" and use pitchers as the situation dictates, without regard to reality.  At least this season he has tried to take into account the players' abilities or lack of them.

The Phillies bullpen is SOOOOOOOO incredibly bad (among the absolute worst in recent major league history) there really is no good move.

All of that said, I expect the team to let Manuel go at the end of the season.  And if they keep this same pitching staff, the results will be the same.

thanx, dm

Don McKee
QDon, what do you think think the Eagles are looking at next year. McNabb is looking to bounce back, but you never know with him. Also, what are your thoughts on Kolb?
Anonymous, Philadelphia, PA  07/07/07
A

I'm not nearly so optimistic as the rest of the fans, who are talking 13-3.  I think it might be 10-6, which still should win the NFC East and get you to the playoffs.   One of the best indications will be opening day in Green Bay.  If the Birds win that one, they could get off to a good start.  If they drop it, they might be 2-2 before their week off and scrambling to make the playoffs.

Most knowledgable football people expect Kolb to be the starter in 2008.  He was drafted to become the starter. So it's only a matter of time.

thanx, dm
