Ask Don McKee

Don McKee has been covering sports since 1966. He joined The Inquirer as the South Jersey columnist in 1974 and has covered high schools from Atlantic City to Cincinnati; Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia football; and the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers over the years. For the last 13 years he has hosted a Sunday talk show on Sports Radio 610 WIP. He tries to live by the sage words of Lord Northcliffe, the man who created the world's first sports page in the late 19th century, and who coined the famous phrase: "News is something that somebody somewhere wants to hide. Everything else is public relations."

QDon: Is there ANY CHANCE that the bright yellow uniforms made it easier for McNabb to find and track his receivers? I wouldn't be surprised if it stood out much better than green/black/white. Did anyone even ask Donovan about it?
Steven, Westville, NJ  09/26/07
ANot that I'm aware of, no.  But to me, that pale color combined with bright sun is much harder to see.  For my eyes, which obviously are not Donovan's, the dark green would be easier to focus on.  It's an nteresting thought. but the main reason Donovan had such a field day was the defense played by Detroit.  After two straight teams shut down the Eagles' passing attack with a press defense, the Lions chose to keep their DBs yards back off the line of scrimmage, allowing the Eagles receivers to get off the line, a feat that eluded them in the two losses.  thanx, dm

QCOFFEE AND DONUTS DON.. WILL BONDS EVER PLAY IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE AGAIN?
steve, glenside, PA  09/22/07
AObviously not.  He's a part-time player at best nowadays.  But if he gets the right AL situation, he can easily hit another 40 homers and get to 800.

QDon Brewer's Closer, Francisco Cordero will become a Free Agent at the end of the season. Should the Phils make Cordero a top priority, or do they leave Myers in the Bullpen?
Mike, Gilbertsville, PA  09/21/07
A

Hi Mike:

My priority would be to get a truely outstanding, 99 percent reliable closer, then return Myers to the rotation. Whether Cordero is that guy, I don't really know.

But even if he is, then you'd have Myers, Hamels and Kendrick in the rotation, with Moyer as the No. 5 guy.  So you STILL need a good starter.  I don't think Adam Beaten is the guy.  dm

QDon, Why hasn't Pat Gillick extended Charley Manuel's contract yet? This team has been running a pitching staff of rejects, waiver wire pickups, career minor leaguers and one pitcher who was waived three times during this year's spring training and at a minimum, will finish above .500. Also, you deserve a lot of credit, you predicted that McNabb was in his final season with the Eagles months ago. The first two games this year certainly support this as does McNabb's HBO interview comments regarding Philadelphia. He knows his days in Philadelphia are numbered.
Mike, Richboro, PA  09/20/07
A

Hi Mike:

There's really only one reason that Gillick has not yet extended Manuel's contract -- he apparently doesn't want to.  This team is sadly inadequate, as you point out, and it's likely that Manuel will be the scapegoat for the lack of pitching.

As far as Donovan goes, it was obvious a year ago that 2007 could be his last season here.  Once the Eagles took a QB with their first pick, it became an absolute certainty.  As I said at the time, all I had to do was connect the dots.  thanx, dm

QDon Eagles look putrid.Penalties, mistakes, idiotic play calling etc All of the above are marks of a very poorly coached team.Reid has had 9 years here and to be honest it isn't getting done.Assuming the losing continues this season-is Reid gone after this season or does he still have some slack with management?
jproc, yardley, PA  09/19/07
A

Reid has enormous stock with management and will go when he chooses.

All of that said, it would not be a surprise to anyone around the team if he decided to become the fulltime GM after this season and allowed Marty Mornhiweg to take over.

Either way, there will be enormous changes in the team by next season.  You are seeing the final chapters of the Donovan McNabb era play out. Jevon Kearse, Darren Howard, LJ Smith all will be gone.  Takeo Spikes, Jon Runyon and Tre Thomas probably also will go.  It's a natural time for a coaching change.

On the other hand, Reid may welcome a chance to build around Kevin Kolb, which is why he drafted him.  Either way, Reid will leave when Reid decides to leave.  thanx, dm

QDon, Do you think the apology Mr. Kraft went far enough? For example Procter & Gamble who own the Gillette brand and naming rights to the stadium the team plays in state the following on their website, "Three billion times a day, P&G brands touch the lives of people around the world. Our corporate tradition is rooted in the principles of personal integrity, respect for the individual and doing what's right for the long-term". I ven't heard an apolgy from either Mr. Kraft or Mr Belichek to their sponsor
Jerry, Sewell, NJ  09/16/07

If Robert Kraft feels he owes Procter & Gamble an apology, I'm sure he'll make one privately.  thanx, dm

QHow about posting Goodell's email address. I find it surprising that it is so hard to find a place for fans to submit feedback to a league that claims to be so fan friendly. PS Can i get a refund on my superbowl ticket?
Eagle Fan in NY, New York, NY  09/16/07
ALOL. I don't think I'd hold my breath on that refund.  And you probably can go through NFL.com to find a way to email the league.  thanx, dm

QDon, the Phillies Bullpen is brutal. What would you think of the Phillies signing Curt Schilling as a Closer this Winter? Then, Myers could be moved back to the rotation. I think Schilling has the proper make-up for a Closer.
Mike, Lansdale, PA  09/06/07
A

As long as Schilling is interested in starting I doubt he'd want to be closer.  I know he's talked about it, and this would be a good situation since a top closer and one more top starter (besides Myers and Hamels) would make them a playoff team.  But I don't mind Myers as the closer.  What the Phillies need, obviously, is bullpen help everywhere else. dm
