Ask Don McKee

Don McKee has been covering sports since 1966. He joined The Inquirer as the South Jersey columnist in 1974 and has covered high schools from Atlantic City to Cincinnati; Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia football; and the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers over the years. For the last 13 years he has hosted a Sunday talk show on Sports Radio 610 WIP. He tries to live by the sage words of Lord Northcliffe, the man who created the world's first sports page in the late 19th century, and who coined the famous phrase: "News is something that somebody somewhere wants to hide. Everything else is public relations."

QDon, I think what the questioner from Mt Holly was referring to is member's of the media stating that McNabb is done HERE in Phialdelphia. And while you have not read anything stating that, the term media includes more than just newspapers. The electronic media expresses this notion daily. Sports radio, specifically the station at the lower end of the dial, has had it in for #5 since he was drafted over Rickey Williams. The hosts there are part of the "media" whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. My question to you is, do you think his media critics judge him fairly?
sc, phila, PA  11/16/07
AAs I said, I am not aware of any media criticism of McNabb.  And to repeat, his status here will be determined solely by contract reasons.   thanx, dm
Don McKee
QMcNabb is ranked 8th in the NFL Not the NFC but the NFL. His stats are as good as Brett Farve's, But in Philly, Fans/Media say he is done. Do you think this is blow-back from the Rush Limbaugh, TO, NAACP Leaders remarks, and the Story on HBO ? Look around the league it aint that easy to get a QB of his calibre. And when Did U oh H become a hot bed for QB's

Hi Big:

The fans' perception of McNabb is fueled only by the Eagles won-loss record behind him the past three seasons.  If the Eagles had been 13-3 in that span, there would be no criticism.  Second, I am not aware of any media which say he is done; to the contrary, ALL stories I have read say he deserves a chance to come back next season.  My personal feeling is that McNabb's future here will be driven entirely by contract considerations and not by on-field performance.   thanx, dm

QDon, I understand the 76ers will have several million dollars come off their salary cap figure after this season ($32m??). Could the Sixers become a legit contender for the Eastern Conference in 2008?
Mike, Gilbertsville, PA  11/06/07
ASince we know nothing of how well the 2007 draft picks will perform, nor if they will keep Andre Miller, it's certainly far too optimistic to tab them contenders in 08-09.  They will have a substantial amount of money available, but if they spend the bulk of it on Miller and Andre Iguodala, then the free agent signing will be somewhat limited.   If they let Miller and Iguodala go (he will be a restricted free agent after this season) then they will a lot of money to sign free agents or to get guys in a sign-and-trade deal elsewhere.

QDon- Derrick Williams at Penn St looked like a heck of a threat a few years ago. Now? Not so much. What happened?
Joe, Buckingham, PA  11/03/07
ATo quote an old line: you're only ever as good as your quarterback.
Don McKee
QDon get back on the radio will ya! Regarding PSU Football, what's going on with Justin King? He seems to lose focus at times and has been giving up some big plays in the last few games. Is it just me, or he not playing as well as he should be?
sc, PA  10/22/07
A

Hi SC:

I'd love to be back on the radio, but it's not my call.

As far as Penn State goes, players under-achieving has been a problem for some years.  Thanx, dm

QDon, Looks like we have "Uncle Charlie" to kick around for another two long years! Face it, the Phils won the division in spite of him, not because of him. Do you agree? Also, who do you predict playing 3rd base next season (beyond Dobbs and the woeful Helms)?
Gino, Eastampton Twp., NJ  10/15/07
A

No.  I think they won despite a hidous bullpen that was non-existent til September.

And I think next year's third baseman will be Dobbs/Helms.

sorry

QDear Don, If your attitude towards hockey is that it's a last resort and not very interesting without the fighting, please stay away. Don't appreciate the beauty of the game and the skills involved. Please just stay away and leave the game to the "goons." The Finns don't want you butchering their names anyway.
Jim Seeds, Boyertown, PA  10/14/07
AI've followed the Flyers since their inception and covered the team from 73-75 in the glory years.  I certainly see no reason to stay away from a team I enjoy very much.  dm

QDon, is Reid getting closer to stepping down as coach? The rumor mill is getting stronger. It's impossible for anyone to stay focused on such an intense job with his family imploding around him.
Bob, PA  10/08/07
ASince none of us knew Andy Reid intimately, let me offer this as just a very gentle suggestion:  maybe he needs to stay so he has something to focus on besides personal issues.  dm.
Don McKee
QDon: Two questions reguarding coaches...First. Does the ine coach of the Eagles tell Mr. Reid that there is a problem with the offensive line in that the QB has been sacked 12 times and # 2 does the bench coach of the Phillies tell the manager that this is not the right time to remove a pitcher.. How much "power" do these coaches have and if the answer is "very little" then why are they employed
steve, Glenside`, PA  10/06/07
AYou are assuming the line coach disagrees with the head coach and the bench coach/pitching coach disagree with the manager.  My assumption is the opposite.   In both cases cited I think all were in agreement.  It just didn't work due to poor execution.  Remember: no decision "works" unless the players make it work.  dm

Qcould you possibly tell me where i could get information on a boxer who fought in the golden gloves in the mid-twenties. He fought under the name of Harr Kidd Duggan and was a welterweight? I have been unsucessful with obvious sights. He lived in West Philly
Anonymous, Ocala, FL  10/04/07
A

Beyond the obvious, no.  My only suggestion would be a micro-film library somewhere.
