Ask Don McKee

Don McKee has been covering sports since 1966. He joined The Inquirer as the South Jersey columnist in 1974 and has covered high schools from Atlantic City to Cincinnati; Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia football; and the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers over the years. For the last 13 years he has hosted a Sunday talk show on Sports Radio 610 WIP. He tries to live by the sage words of Lord Northcliffe, the man who created the world's first sports page in the late 19th century, and who coined the famous phrase: "News is something that somebody somewhere wants to hide. Everything else is public relations."

Bill Cower

QIt's been reported that Bill Cower spent some time last week with PSU athletic director tim Curley. Do you think he's being courted by the Nittany Lions to replace JoePA? I think it would take a big name waiting in the wings to make JoePa consider leaving and I've heard you mention you think Cower would be a good fit for the lions.
steve, phila, PA  03/04/08

Hi Steve:

unfortunately, it's Cowher's youngest daughter who is being courted.  The Nits are recruiting her for basketball, I think,  Bill was just visiting.    If you've read me before, you know he's my No. 1 candidate.  I also have heard that the financial support people and fund raisers have told Graham Spanier the money will be available if they want to hire a "big name" coach.  But I don't Cowher's going there.  If he returns to coaching (and he has said emphatically that he'll sit out next season, too) the Carolina Panthers would seem a better bet.  I thought maybe the Redskins, too, but the hired Jim Zorn. So maybe Cowher would be a candidate at PSU....but I think it's a long shot.  thanx, dm

Eagles wideout?

Qis there any chance the eagles can get r. williams out of detroit or fitzgereld out of arizona?
jim, phila, PA  03/02/08
Aall league informants say arizona will not trade fitzgerald.  and i don't think they can get williams for lito shepard

Would Giants trade Tyree?

QIs there any way the NY Giabnts would trade Super Bowl hero david Tyree. Pro: He has been a journeyman and his value may never be higher than it is now. Con: he is THE MAN in New York. And he appears to have put earlier personal problems behind him. Thanks.
Jerzee Giant, Montclair, NJ  02/29/08

your reasoning makes sense, in that his value will never be higher.  but the giants have lost a few guys from that team and i don't see them making any more moves right now.

maybe at the draft....

Is Arlen Specter senile, stupid or an Eagles fanatic?

QDoesn't the distinguished Senator have something more important to worry about than how the NFL is handling Cameragate - like jobs, housing, the economy, Iraq, lowering the deficit, ethics, the state of the COmmonwealth, lobbying on behalf of Comcast etc. It really is hard to figure out his motivation so maybe its senility, maybe he's too much of an Eagles fanatic or maybe this is just part of his hard work on behalf of Comcast against the NFL!! It certainly does make you wonder. As the distinguished solon from Baltimore says (Senator Clay Davis) this is some shameful sheeettt.
Frustrated in Philly, Philadephia, PA  02/27/08

Senator Specter is a highly successful politician who intends to run for a fifth term in 2010.  Draw your own conclusions.

Too alarmist?

QI saw your grumble that the Phillies' pitching plans were "unraveling" (your term) with the Lidge surgery. Don't you think that's too alarmist? Seems to me that baseball is a marathon, not a sprint; it's like saying that the Kenyan slated to win a marathon is immediately downgraded if his first step after the starting gun is a stumble. Let's relax and enjoy being NL East Champions for awhile.
Richard in LV, Allentown, PA  02/27/08
AI'm neither relaxed nor alarmed.  I'm pointing out that the Phillies' strategy of using Lidge as the closer while returning Myers to the rotation is in jeopardy.  That seems painfully obvious, doesn't it?  thanx, dm

Celtic

QDon,

Do you think that Celtic can win the tie with barca, being that the first leg is in Galsgow?

QDon, Happy Holidays! If Jeff Laurie allows Andy Reid, Tom Heckert, and Donovan McNabb to return for the 2008 season, Eagle fans should be labeled as "suckers." Reid/Heckert have allowed good veteran players to leave via Free Agency while not drafting adequate replacements. Jeff Laurie needs to step up to the plate and fix his franchise. Does he possess the back-bone?
Mike, Gilbertsville, PA  12/12/07
AAs I have written on many previous occasions, Andy Reid will be here as long as Andy Reid wishes to keep the job.  thanx, dm
Don McKee
QDashing Don, I am impressed with the play of "3rd stringer" JR Reed as a pass defender. No safety has hit receivers as hard as Reed. Are his past three game an anomaly or is he the real deal? And, what is Andy ("blinders")Reid's take on him?
Gene, Eastampton Twp., NJ  12/03/07
AAndy seems to love him.  Remember, he was one of Reid's draft picks and that's always an enhancement in the eyes of the coaching staff.
Don McKee
QJust a question I am sure you can't answer...Dana Shires said that the original Gatorade tasted like toilet bowl cleaner. Am just wondering how he knew what toilet bowl cleaner tastes like??
Anonymous, Wernersville, PA  12/02/07
A

That was the first thing that crossed my mind;  maybe he had prior experience at a really sick frat party.

Always great to hear from a fellow Wernersville boy!  Keep in touch.

Don McKee
QHi Don, What is your take on the Eagles "special teams" coach Rory Segrest? It appears that his poorly coached squad is neither special or a unified team on the majority of kick-offs and punts. This is another blind spot that Andy Reid seems unwilling to change.
Gene, Eastampton Twp., NJ  11/18/07
ANo head coach changes assistants during the season.  Watch this one closely during the off-season.
