He joined The Inquirer as the South Jersey columnist in 1974 and has covered high schools from Atlantic City to Cincinnati; Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia football; and the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers over the years. For the last 13 years he has hosted a Sunday talk show on Sports Radio 610 WIP. He tries to live by the sage words of Lord Northcliffe, the man who created the world's first sports page in the late 19th century, and who coined the famous phrase: "News is something that somebody somewhere wants to hide. Thinking Outside The Box

QDon,
What's the contract status of Ichiro in Seattle. Pitchers aside, the Phillies need a bat that can hit for average. I think he would be the perfect addtion for this team.
Also what is the minor league catching situation. IS there someone down there that can weekly ground into only 20 double plays a year, because if so he would be an upgrade.
sc, phila, PA  07/09/08
A

Hi SC:

Almost exactly one year ago, on July 13th of 2007 to be exact, Ichiro signed a contract extension with Seattle for an additional five years, a contract lasting until 2012. The Associated Press reported the deal at $90 million, consisting of a $17 million annual salary and $5 million signing bonus, although part of Ichiro's annual salary will be deferred.  The point is, he's not a free agent any time soon and would command a major investment on the part of any team trading for him.

I'd love to have him, because I think a major part of the Phillies' offensive problems are the lack of real consistency at the top of the lineup.  But the price tag (in money and prospects) would be very high.

Second, there are two catchers in the Phils system right now who are possible major leaguers a year from now.  Lou Marson in Reading is considered the better long term prospect.  Jason Jaramillo in Allentown was a No. 1 pick about four years ago.  Either or both will be on the team next season.

"Best" homestand?

Q"The Phillies ended their best homestand in 13 years - not since 1995 had they gone 8-2 in a 10-gamer - with a 36-26 record."

I assume you meant "best 10-game homestand", because they went 12-1 between May 31-June 12, 2005, which is better.
Drago, Philadelphia, PA  06/06/08
AAs the item noted, it was on a 10-game homestand.

Watered Down

QSome people say that baseball is watered down. They say that because of expansion there are less good players per team. I say that since baseball has expanded from 16 to 30 teams the population of this country has doubled and also there are so many Latinos and Asians playing. The talent pool has at least doubled. What do you think?
fffej321, glendora , NJ  05/24/08
AThe population has doubled.  The talent pool, however, consists of those playing baseball.  As many have noted, few African Americans take up the sport and vastly fewer caucasians take it up now either.  That's why there has been an enormous increase in players of latin ancestry.  It's a tricky question.  I'd say the pool is about the same.  However, once China, with half the world's population, fully embraces the sport, you'll see an enormous increase in players from that country.  thanx, dm

On major league baseball

QHello Don,

Isn't it time for Jamie Moyer to retire to the "senior slowpitch softball" leagues?

Also, can the greed of major league baseball be more insatiable than the announced charges of $150-$775 per ticket for the all star game to be held this year at Yankee Stadium? I suppose if morons are willing to pay outrageous sums, baseball will continue to exploit.
Gene, Eastampton Twp., PA  05/01/08
ATicket prices are like gas prices.  They are where they are because people are willing to pay the freight.

Flyers

QDon,
Please be the voice of reason and explain to Flyers fans that there is no referee conspiracy against them. They seem to think that the Flyers have not lost a game on their own since 1980. Why can't flyers fans hold their team accountable for losses the way Eagles, Sixers, and Phillies fans do?
sc, phila, PA  04/25/08
AIt's a Philly thing, SC.  Eagles fans blame Andy Reid, Phillies fans blame Charlie Manuel and 76ers fans blame (blamed) Billy King.  The Flyers fans are simply following the crowd.  In a small-town atmosphere like Philadelphia's you can't hold the millionaire performers responsible for their performance.  So you blame the coach, manager, media, officals or the fans!

Trading a "free agent"

QReading your article about Andy Reid and Tom H. reminded me of the media’s handling of the Democratic debate the other night. Their ‘ego’ would not allow them to think that the public didn’t give a dam about the “stupid question” they asked.

But then I am sure you think everything that you write is straight from god’s lips to your ears, Wrong! You are more like Andy Reid than you think! He has trained you well!

How about, trading the Defensive back ‘free agent’ from New England for Miami’s first round, he is better than any of the college players they could draft.

If they accept, then play the trickle down game. Ask St. Louis what they would give to get the #1 pick. Supposed they offer a swap of #2, take it and go to Atlanta and do the same thing. Maybe they want Matt Ryan, great, give him to them for their #1, #2, and maybe #3. For your $4, #5, #6 and give #7!

Go to Kansas City and trade them your #1 plus Lito for they #1 and the Defensive End with all the sacks. Now you have just traded a ‘free agent’ for a ‘free agent and picked up two #2 and a #3.

Shock the world, offer Cincinnati, your #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 for Chad Johnson plus give them $4 Million, this is an offer they can’t refuse. Now you have a #1 Defensive end plus a super wide out. Discount the fact that you still have a pick in the top 6. All because you thought outside of the box! And thought you could do it!

You may never get an opportunity like this again! This is probably the best year to do this!

Sincerely,

Bob Graham Sr. rbgraham@comcast.net 215-355-5660

Hi Bob:

I was not the author of a piece on either Andy Reid or Tom Heckert last Sunday.

As far as the debate goes, the media's only sin was finally asking questions of a media favorite who had previously received a free pass.  thankx, dm

What about Michigan's other receiver

QI think that the Eagles should take a look at Adrian Arrington in either the 2nd or 3rd round. I feel that he has a lot of potential and then the Eagles would not have to take the first round gamble on a receiver. What do you think about him?
Carl , Largo, MD  04/18/08
A

I think players taken in Rounds 1 and 2 have to be accomplished guys with a very high ceiling, and not guys with potential.   In the 4th or lower, tho, absolutely.   Grab all the sleepers you can get!  dm

Draft a Receiver -- if the right guy is available

QThe NFL.com report is a stupid basis for deciding whether or not to draft a receiver with a high pick (and therefore not a very newsworthy item for your column). It may be a valid case for patience (by fans and media) with young receivers, but it by no means is a raionale for deciding to pull the trigger on a top quality WR with size, speed, hands and head.

In 2007, 23 NFL teams had 1000 yard receivers. Four (4) teams, NE, CIN, DAL, CLE each had two (2) 1,000 yard receivers, but CLE Kellen Winslow is a TE, not WR, and DAL Jason Witten is a TE, not WR. So when measuring WRs, only NE and CIN had two (2) 1,000 yard WRs. KC came close to having two with Dwayne Bowe at 995, but Tony Gonzalez is a TE, not WR. SD had two above 970, but none actually above 1,000, and Antonio Gates, is a TE, not WR.

So, for a hundred different factors that are not considered in the NFL.com report, it is ridiculous to expect rookies to come into the league and make the 1,000 yard mark, when not all teams have one, few (2) have more than one, and even pass happy offenses like Philly and Indianapolis only had one each.
Brian, Washington  04/17/08
AI didn't say it was a rationale for not drafting a receiver.  I thought it was highly valid because it pointed out potential pitfalls.   thanx, dm

Summary of Eagles schedule

QAre you an Eagles hater or do you ACTUALLY believe what you wrote in this column? 7-9? You must've been looking at Temple's schedule. Do you really think that we will lose all of our division games?
Mike B., Indianapolis, IN  04/16/08
AEverything I write is something I believe Mike.  I think it will be a struggle all season to get to 7-9.  best, dm

Sizing up the Eagles’ schedule - serious?

QWas this last minute? Did you put thought into this? Jouranlists should be banned from writing about the upcoming season until the last preseason game is played. Is it that you want a cookie for getting it right this early? Stop wasting trees by printing this rubbish.
Mr. Fancy Pants, Philly, PA  04/16/08
A

why?  i think it's a waste of trees to write about baseball until October.  but we all like to have fun.  seriously, i think given the eagles vast needs on both sides of the ball, it will be a struggle all season just to get to seven wins.   best, dm

and yes, where's my cookie!!!
