Ask Carrie Rickey

Carrie Rickey, an Inquirer film critic since 1986, was born in L.A. around the time the Jennifer Jones/Laurence Olivier movie Carrie hit screens. Hence her name. Since then she's seen more than 12,000 films without losing her love of movies -- or wordplay. But don't envy her job too much. She has to sit through the likes of Battlefield Earth just so she can warn you not to.

Showcase at the Ritz - Vorhees info

QHi carrie, I am trying to reach a "live" person at the Ritz Center in Vorhees and have been unable to do so. I am an Activity Director at an adult community and would like to get a trip organized to see one of their foreign films. Is there a listing somewhere with a schedule of what's coming? Special rates for groups and/or seniors? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Lisa

SLUMDOG Noms Etc

QHi, Carrie. I've been hoping you'd weigh in on the SLUMDOG GG Noms, but maybe the messages I've sent went into your SPAM...? Why do YOU think the HFPA folks only nominated Danny Boyle when the IMDb & EPK both list Loveleen Tandan as "co-director"? All best.
Jan Lisa Huttner , Chicago ,IL  12/16/08
AExcellent question and one I do not have an answer for. You would think the Hollywood Foreign Press would be acutely sensitive to the sensitivity of a British director who solicited the collaboration of a native Mumbaiker to make a film. This needs further investigation, but my guess is that the HFPA bylaws hold that it nominates co-directors (think the Coen Brothers)-- not a director and the assistant director.

Film Festival recommendations?

QHi, Carrie. The Philly film fest is almost here. As usual, there are a ton of films and not much is known about each. Any movies you have already screened and liked or that you can otherwise suggest? Thanks.
Jim C. , Philly ,PA  03/26/08
AThe opening night film, Young @ Heart, is charming. I very much like "The Visitor." I hear good things about "In a Dream," "American Teen," "And Then She Found Me," and "The Forbidden Kingdom."

Filmmaking and Writer's Strike

QWith the Academy Awards ceremony in jeopardy, how does this ongoing strike begin to affect the filmmaking industry? We already know the impact on TV at this point. I realize the delay between writing and production for film is much greater, but how much strike is too much?
Chazz , Johnstown ,PA  02/06/08
AGiven the hit to the California economy, I would say that one more day of strike is too much. But the screenwriters are right to fight for a sliver of the pie the industry will get from downloads. The impact of a three-month strike isn't likely to hurt film as much as television in that there has been overproduction on the film side for the past decade and less product in the pipeline will create a correction, where three movies open a week rather than five. I'm optimistic that we will see a resolution to the strike by the end of the month. Thanks for the question.

QPlease help if you can? This asian movie is about a first wife and her husband and his others wives, wife one is unhappy and meets a western man, this is a war or explosion and her home is ruined and she is able to go off to the country to this man and his school or hospital or something.

This isn't striking a chord. I'll post and see if it resonates with another reader.

QCarrie, I'm looking for the title of an asian movie, that was released not too long ago. It's about a woman who abandons her four (?) children, and they must fend for themselves. Do you know what this movie is? Much thanks!! =]

It sounds like a Japanese film with the English title "Nobody Knows."

QCarrie, Did the movie Danika ever make it to theaters or did it go straight to video? Does Marisa Tomei have any more movies on the horizon?
Anonymous ,PA  08/24/07
A

Danika seems to have fallen off the coming attractions map. But Tomei has four movies in production and/or on the brink of release: Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Waer, Inc., The Night Job and the TV movie The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud.

QDear Carrie, What did you think about the Simpsons Movie?? Is it Okay for my kids?
Anonymous , philadelphia ,PA  08/15/07
A

Dear Caraline,

I don't think the movie is as funny as the TV shows was in its peak years. I think it's probably fine for mature kids 11 and older. By mature I mean the kind of tween who is responsible enough not to parrot the language he or she hears in movies, the kind of tween who doesn't need to be reminded to do the chores or brush teeth.

QCarrie: Please thank Chazz for helping me to identify this movie. Its been eating away at me. The movie is indeed titled "Hit and Run" but has the working title "Obsessed" which is ironic because for years I've been obsessed in tracking it down. Now my next mission is to find the DVD version as I see that its only available in VHS format. People still have VCRS in their home:) Thanks again to you and Chazz. Regards, Ryan

QThis may be an answer to Ryan who was looking for a film about a hit and run accident. In 1987, there was a Canadian TV film called "Hitting Home" with a plot that sounds like Ryan's description. IMDB.com has a lot more detail. Hope this helps.

Chazz,

Awesome! Many thanks.
