IT WAS amusing to read Christine Flowers' op-ed contending that Sen. Vince Fumo doesn't understand the rest of the state very well and that his hyperbolic comment about the legislature passing a slavery bill was another case of Philadelphia officials hurting the city's cause in Harrisburg.

Re "If guns are the problem, why aren't Hispanic, Asian and white males killing each other?":
First, the press reports more black-on-black crimes. Second, whites are so busy leaving the border open, killing people in schools, molesting in churches, kiddie porn, meth labs, political crimes. Maybe whites are killing whites in the suburbs.

WHAT a difference a decade makes. Back in the Monica days of the late '90s, no matter what side of impeachment you were on, most of us could only shake our heads as Bill Clinton tried to deflect a prosecutorial inquiry by parsing the precise definition of the word "is."

A.J. THOMSON'S recent op-ed about the Philadelphia Zoo contains one indisputable fact: The elephant exhibit is inadequate.
Unfortunately, the elephants aren't the only ones among the zoo's 1,600 animals suffering in inadequate digs. Look no farther than right next door to the elephants, where a lone rhino is confined to a tiny barren yard. The zoo hasn't even bothered to provide the rhino with any shade - not even an easily available cheap awning.
