Christy Martin shot, stabbed, burglarized

The home of Christy Martin, the world's best-known female boxer, was burglarized while she was hospitalized after being shot and stabbed Tuesday by her husband, Orange County (Fla.) deputy sheriffs said.

James Martin, 66, remains at large, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Christy Martin, 42, flagged down a motorist Tuesday evening and the motorist took her to Florida Hospital-Apopka, where doctors determined she had been shot and stabbed in the torso and left leg, deputies said. She told deputies she was attacked by her husband when she returned to her home after being away for a few days.

A friend went to the home the next afternoon to pick up some personal belongings for Christy Martin and called the Sheriff's Office because it appeared the home had been burglarized, sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons said.

When deputies arrived, they checked out the house and found no one inside but confirmed it had been burglarized, Solomons said. Investigators have not said what, if anything, was stolen, but said they have no suspects, Solomons said.

In the early 1990s, Martin signed with promoter Don King, who placed her in several pay-per-view fights. She once boxed on an undercard for Mike Tyson. Most recently, she and her husband operated a boxing gym in Apopka, where they trained amateur boxers.

Records indicate deputies were twice called to the couple's home Tuesday. An out-of-state caller contacted the Sheriff's Office to report Jim Martin was distraught about the relationship with his wife and was suicidal. The caller also said there were weapons in the home.

* Two-time defending champion Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open because of a foot injury. Williams has played only one exhibition match since winning Wimbledon in July. She had surgery after cutting her foot on broken glass at a restaurant following her win at the All England Club. She said she had additional surgery last month and couldn't risk returning before the injury had properly healed.

* Roger Federer and Andy Murray easily secured spots in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals in London with straight-sets victories in their last round-robin matches. Their semifinal opponents will be decided today, when the last round-robin matches in Group A are played.

* The Nigerian Football Federation has made an official complaint to the African governing body accusing Equatorial Guinea of fielding two men on its women's soccer team. Equatorial Guinea's federation has denied the allegations against captain Genoveva Anonma and striker Salimata Simpore, saying the claims stem from an "inferiority complex" among rival teams because of the recent success of the tiny west African nation. Anonma, who plays for German club USV Jena, reportedly told the BBC that she has already been gender tested, which she found "offensive." Equatorial Guinea qualified for next year's World Cup in Germany.

* Britain's national terror threat will remain at a severe level during the 2012 London Olympics, the country's national counterterrorism minister said. The current threat was raised to the second highest classification in January, meaning an attack is highly likely in Britain.

* Martin Kaymer got the best of Graeme McDowell in their battle for the European money title, shooting a 5-under 67 to take a five-shot lead over his rival after the first round of the Dubai World Championship. Kaymer was two strokes behind leader Robert Karlsson. Kaymer can claim the money title and a $1.5 million bonus by finishing higher than McDowell.
