THE PLAY: With the scored tied, 1-1, Shane Victorino led off the fifth inning by lining a ball into the alley in right-center that caromed off Jason Heyward 's glove for a three-base error.

THE SETUP: The teams had traded second-inning runs and Cole Hamels had gotten out of the top half of the inning by striking out Melky Cabrera and Brandon Beachy , stranding Alex Gonzalez , who had doubled with one out.

THE AT-BAT: Batting left against the righthander Beachy, who was making his major league debut, Victorino took a fastball (high) and a changeup (low) outside for balls. He then lined a 2-0 fastball into the right-centerfield gap. Heyward, who didn't get a good read on the ball, stutter-stepped and could only get leather on it, the ball rolling to the wall. Victorino went into third standing.

THE AFTERMATH: Victorino hesitated before heading for home when Placido Polanco followed with a grounder to short. Gonzalez, playing about half-way back, thought about throwing home to get Victorino, but instead threw Polanco out at first and the Phils went ahead.

THE STATS: Since Jimmy Rollins has been out, Victorino is 14-for-42 (.333) with seven runs scored in 10 games out of the leadoff spot . . . The error was Heyward's sixth of the season; two of them were throwing errors.

THE QUOTE: Braves' manager Bobby Cox: "It was windy as hell out there and that ball was smoked. I think it knuckled on him out there."

ALSO CONSIDERED: Carlos Ruiz' second-inning double that scored Ryan Howard to tie the game after the Braves had gone ahead in the top half . . . Doubleplays turned by the Phillies' infield to end the first, second and sixth innings . . . Brad Lidge mowing down Atlanta 1-2-3 in the ninth for his 24th save.
