Florida upsets Mich. State in Atlantic City tourney

Erving Walker hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:56 left and Florida hung on to upset No. 2 Michigan State, 77-74, last night in the Legends Classic in Atlantic City.

Walker finished with 12 points to help the Gators (5-0) remain undefeated.

Durrell Summers missed two last-gasp three-point attempts in the final minute for the Spartans (4-1).

Chandler Parsons scored 14 points to lead the Gators. Walker hit his three from beyond NBA range in front of Florida's bench for a 72-71 lead.

Kalin Lucas scored 20 points for the Spartans.

The Gators will play Rutgers in the championship game.

In the opening game, Mike Rosario had 22 points and Hamady Ndiaye added 14 to lead Rutgers (3-1) to an 83-75 win over Massachusetts. Ricky Harris scored 22 for UMass (2-3).

In other games:

* At New York, Nolan Smith had 16 points as No. 7 Duke (6-0) beat No. 13 Connecticut (4-1), 68-59, in the NIT Season Tip-Off, in a matchup of Division I's two winningest coaches. The Blue Devils' Mike Krzyzewski has 839 wins, while Huskies coach Jim Calhoun has 809. Jerome Dyson had 15 points for UConn.

* At Orlando, Fla., Lazar Hayward scored 22 points to lead Marquette (6-0) past No. 15 Michigan, 79-65, in the semifinals of the Old Spice Classic. The Wolverines (3-1) got 22 points from Manny Harris . . . Chris Singleton had 14 points and six rebounds as Florida State (5-1) beat Alabama, 60-51, to set up tomorrow's championship game.

* At Anaheim, Calif., T.J. Campbell scored a season-high 23 points to lead Portland (5-0) to a 61-56 upset of No. 22 Minnesota in the 76 Classic. Al Nolen scored 13 points for the Gophers (3-1) . . . Da'Sean Butler scored 17 points to lead No. 8 West Virginia (4-0) to a 73-66 victory over Texas A & M . . . Tanner Smith scored 17 points to lead No. 19 Clemson (5-1) to an 87-79 victory over Long Beach State.

* At Chicago, John Shurna had 25 points to lead Northwestern (4-1) over No. 23 Notre Dame, 72-58, in the Chicago Invitational Challenge. Luke Harangody led the Irish (5-1) with 21 points.

* At Kansas, Tyshawn Taylor had 18 points and the No. 1 Jayhawks (5-0) beat Tennessee Tech, 112-75.

* At Tennessee, Scotty Hopson scored 21 points to lead the No. 9 Vols (5-1) to an 86-69 win over College of Charleston.

* At Syracuse, Wes Johnson had 26 points as the No. 10 Orange (6-0) beat Columbia, 85-60.

In women's games:

* At Connecticut, Maya Moore scored 23 points to lead the No. 1 Huskies (4-0) to a 91-46 rout of Hofstra, giving coach Geno Auriemma his 700th career victory.

* At Stanford, Kayla Pedersen had 18 points and 12 rebounds in leading the No. 2 Cardinal (5-0) over Utah, 60-41.

* At St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Melissa Lechlitner scored 15 points and No. 5 Notre Dame (5-0) defeated South Carolina, 78-55, in the Paradise Jam. *
