D.J. Rivera, Malik Alvin get the boot at Binghamton

Two players from Philadelphia were among five released from Binghamton University's basketball program yesterday.

The two are D.J. Rivera, of Ss. Neumann-Goretti, and Malik Alvin, of Simon Gratz. The other three released were Corey Chandler, Paul Crosby and David Fine.

No reason was given.

In a statement, coach Kevin Broadus said, "If any of the young men in our program don't respect the decisions that have been made or the rules we have in place, then they need to move on with their lives."

On Thursday, Emanuel Mayben was arraigned on felony drug charges and kicked off the team.

Nelson was joined at guard by Duke's Jason Williams. The forwards were Kevin Durant, of Texas, and Joakim Noah, of Florida. Tyler Hansbrough, of North Carolina, is the center.

* Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl apologized for a joking remark that linked the rural home of one of his players to the Ku Klux Klan.

The Volunteers' fifth-season coach was caught on camera Thursday by WBIR-TV during a charity fundraising event describing the challenge of shaping a team of players from different backgrounds.

"I've got a tough job," the Boston native said. "I've got to put these guys from different worlds together, right? I've got guys from Chicago, Detroit. I'm talking about the 'hood! And I've got guys from Grainger County, where they wear the hood!"
