Dodgers win in 13 after ninth-inning collapse

James Loney led off the 13th inning with a homer to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 7-6 win yesterday over the Padres in San Diego.

Loney hit his sixth homer of the season into the rightfield seats off Edward Mujica (2-4) to help the Dodgers win after squandering a 6-0 lead.

"I guess this is the product of the fact that we have played so many close games,'' said Dodgers manager Joe Torre. "Even though we were emotionally drained after that ninth inning, we go out there and worked at it."

Jeff Weaver (5-2) pitched three hitless innings for the win. He intentionally walked Adrian Gonzalez with one out in the 13th inning to bring up pitcher Kevin Correia, who sacrified him to second. The Padres had no position players left so they brought Correia in to bunt.

San Diego rookie Everth Cabrera capped a five-run ninth inning with a two-run single that tied the game at 6 when closer Jonathan Broxton failed to hold a 6-2 lead.

Los Angeles pounded out 18 hits and took a 6-0 lead in the fifth. But the Dodgers tied a season high by stranding 14 runners, including twice leaving the bases loaded.

The rally ruined a masterful game by Dodgers All-Star Chad Billingsley, who carried a two-hitter into the ninth inning.

Casey Blake hit a three-run homer and Andre Ethier added a solo shot for the first-place Dodgers, who hold the best record in baseball (52-30) at the midway point of the season.

In other games:

* At San Francisco, Roy Oswalt pitched eight strong innings in the Houston Astros' 7-1 victory over the Giants.

Miguel Tejada, Hunter Pence and former Phillie Jason Michaels each hit solo home runs for the Astros, who had been shut out in their previous two games against the Giants.

* At Denver, Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer and Felipe Lopez broke a tie game with an RBI single in the seventh, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-3 win over the Rockies.

It's the second straight game the Diamondbacks rallied late for the victory, and gives them their first series win since mid-June at Kansas City.

* At Cincinnati, Colby Rasmus' homer started St. Louis' eight-run onslaught against slumping righthander Bronson Arroyo, and the Cardinals got another solid start from Chris Carpenter for a 10-1 victory over the Reds.

Rasmus hit a two-run homer in the first off Arroyo (8-8), who is 1-5 in his last seven starts.

* At Washington, Scott Olsen pitched into the ninth inning, newly acquired Nyjer Morgan had three hits, and the Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves, 5-3, for their second straight victory.

Olsen (2-4) won for the first time since returning June 28 from the 15-day disabled list after a bout with left shoulder tendinitis.

* At Chicago, Ted Lilly pitched effectively into the seventh inning and Derrek Lee hit a two-run homer, leading the Cubs to an 8-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jake Fox also had a two-run home run for the Cubs, who took three of four from the Brewers.

* At Miami, Ricky Nolasco struck out 12 in eight innings to win his fourth consecutive start, and the Florida Marlins beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-0.

Nolasco (6-6) allowed three hits and missed his career high for strikeouts by one.

Noteworthy

* Giants' lefthanded starter Randy Johnson left yesterday's loss to the Astros with a left shoulder strain after committing a throwing error in the top of the fourth inning.

Johnson said he would have an MRI today.

Johnson originally hurt the shoulder when he took an awkward swing against Roy Oswalt in striking out in the bottom of the third. *
