Jeter holds off Lee, Rodgers edges Patton in 100-meter races
Jeter's winning time was a wind-aided 10.776 seconds and was her first national title. Lee, who won last year's Olympic trials on the same track, was timed in 10.777 seconds, and became the first woman to break 10.8 seconds and not win the national championship.
Lauryn Williams finished third to take the last of America's three spots for the world championship meet, which will be held in Berlin in mid-August.
Michael Rodgers won the men's 100 in 9.91 seconds, over a weak field that did not include Tyson Gay or Walter Dix. Darvis Patton finished second in 9.92 seconds, with no other runner going under 10 seconds.
Monzavous Edwards was third, and will join Rodgers, Patton and Gay at the world championships. Gay qualified based on his 2007 world title. He ran in a preliminary heat Thursday and finished in a wind-aided 9.75 seconds before pulling out of the meet.
Dix pulled up with a hamstring injury during a semifinal yesterday afternoon. A bronze medal-winner in both the 100 and 200 meters at the Beijing Olympics last summer, Dix shook his head no when asked if he would be able to run the latter event today.
Villanova graduate Jen Rhines finished second in the women's 5,000 meters, behind Kara Goucher. Rhines' time was 15 minutes, 26.92 seconds, but to qualify for the World Championships Rhines will have to improve her time by 16.92 seconds by Aug. 3.
La Salle grad Sean Quigley placed seventh in the men's 5,000.
The lone local entrant to advance to a final yesterday was Nicole Leach, who will run for the 400-meter hurdles championship today. The meet concludes tomorrow. *
