Pocono Raceway's new partnership will fuel charitable donations

For the first time since 1996, a NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway will have a name besides Pocono and Pennsylvania in the title. Make that two names.

The Aug. 3 Sprint Cup race at Pocono will be known as the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500.

The raceway, Sunoco and the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter announced a partnership yesterday. Sunoco, headquartered in Philadelphia, is the official fuel of NASCAR.

Brandon Igdalsky, Pocono's president, said the raceway will donate 10 percent of revenue from online ticket purchases to the Red Cross. He said fans purchasing the first 1,500 grandstand reserve tickets using the Red Cross promotion code "Red Cross" on www.poconoraceway.com will receive free prerace pit/paddock passes.

The raceway will feature a place to donate at its Web site and will collect donations at the race. The Red Cross also will receive a percent of proceeds from walker fees for the Track Walk on Aug. 2 at 3:30 p.m. For information, check www.nascar.com/foundation.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter's Red Cross House also will benefit from the association. The Red Cross House in West Philadelphia is a temporary housing facility for disaster victims.

"It all fell together at the right time with the right people for a good cause," Igdalsky said. "Pocono Raceway wants to help support [the Red Cross'] mission."

Sunoco will offer promotional and marketing support for the race.

The last Cup series races at Pocono with title sponsors were the UAW-GM Teamwork 500 and the Miller Genuine Draft 500.

Franchitti out of business

Bad news for Dario Franchitti: His rookie Cup series season is over. Chip Ganassi Racing announced yesterday that it will "cease operation" of Franchitti's No. 40 Dodge.

"In this tough business environment," Ganassi said, "continuing to run the car without proper funding has become increasingly difficult."

Franchitti, a former Indianapolis 500 and Indy Racing League champion, is 41st in Cup points. He could continue racing in the Nationwide Series.

Ganassi Racing fields two sponsored teams in the Cup series: Juan Pablo Montoya is 20th, and Reed Sorenson is 31st. *
