Archbishop Ryan's Rogers commits to Maine for basketball

While there would have been nothing "wrong" with playing Division II basketball, Andrew Rogers hoped all along to get a D-I shot and now it's going to happen.

Rogers, star 5-9 point guard for Archbishop Ryan, the Catholic League runner-up, today will sign a letter of intent with Maine.

"I'm definitely very excited for this opportunity," he said.

He's not alone in the family. Especially the portion directly involved with the Raiders' oncourt success.

"It only takes one school to like you," said Bernie Rogers, Ryan's coach and Andrew's brother. "Maine has a need for a point guard. Andrew has worked very hard and it's great to see him get this shot."

Andrew was intensely recruited by Philadelphia University, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Merrimack. Cornell was also involved.

Maine first made serious contact about 3 weeks ago. Coach Ted Woodward flew to Philly last Thursday to meet with the Rogers family, and then Andrew made an official visit over the weekend.

"They made me feel pretty special. Made me feel wanted," said Andrew, a first-team Daily News All-City honoree and the Markward Club's top senior. "And they have a kinesiology/phys ed major that really interests me. That's definitely a plus.

"The coaches said they didn't have a true point guard this past season. They had some bigger kids - very good players - who would move in and out of that spot. Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but they're saying, depending on how I do, I could come in and fill a solid point guard role for them.

"They're looking to do some special things there. I want to be part of that." *
