Former NFL player Spellman arrested following car chase

Former NFL defensive lineman Alonzo Spellman was arrested yesterday after Tulsa, Okla., police fired pepper-spray pellets into his car following a nearly 20-minute chase.

Spellman, 36, who played for Rancocas Valley High in Mount Holly, N.J., was booked on complaints of eluding, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, resisting arrest and driving without a license, jail records show. His bond was set at $10,700.

The chase began at 12:23 p.m. after officers responded to a disturbance at a convenience store in midtown Tulsa, police spokesman Leland Ashley said. When officers arrived, Spellman got into a Chrysler Pacifica and drove away, Ashley said. After stopping, police said Spellman refused to get out of the car for about 20 minutes until officers fired "pepper bullets" through the windows.

Spellman played nine seasons in the NFL for Chicago, Detroit and Dallas. He has a history of treatment for mental illness and was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation after his involvement in a standoff with police in 1998.

* Indianapolis defensive coordinator Ron Meeks interviewed again for the Washington coaching job. He also interviewed Jan. 17 and 18. Meeks and former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel are considered the favorites to succeed Joe Gibbs, although there are rumors Steve Mariucci, the former San Francisco and Detroit coach who now works for the NFL Network, is a candidate.

* Tight end Teyo Johnson signed with Buffalo, attempting a comeback after missing all of last season with an injury.

* As expected, Romeo Crennel signed a 2-year contract extension with the Cleveland Browns. The extension, believed to be worth about $4 million per season, takes Crennel through the 2011 season.

* Jacksonville defensive tackle Tony McDaniel has settled a civil lawsuit lingering since his playing days at Tennessee over a fight during a pickup basketball game.

Edward Goodrich, a student at Tennessee, sued McDaniel for $800,000 for breaking four bones in his face when McDaniel punched him after the game at a campus gym in 2005. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

* A delegation from Indianapolis will travel to Arizona this week for the Super Bowl, with an eye toward the city making a bid for the 2012 game. *
