Hovaker, Nusum lead Kixx to victory

Nick Hovaker won the first game of his rookie season in net and John Barry Nusum scored a hat trick as the Kixx snapped a three-game losing streak with a 17-13 win over New Jersey in a Major Indoor Soccer League game before 6,142 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum yesterday.

Hovaker was filling in for Peter Pappas, who missed his third straight game due to a neck injury.

Nusum scored twice off assists from Sandre Naumoski to give the Kixx (8-11) a 4-0 start. Player/coach Don D'Ambra then scored to give the Kixx a 6-0 lead.

The goal was D'Ambra's team-leading 11th of the season. He also assisted on Ptah Myers' goal that gave the Kixx a 10-5 lead and made D'Ambra just the 12th in MISL history to record 200 assists.

The Ironmen dropped to 10-7.

The Kixx play their next three games at the Spectrum beginning with Detroit on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

Wings

Veteran Jake Bergey scored 20 seconds into overtime to lead the Wings past Buffalo, 15-14, in a National Lacrosse League game Saturday night at the Wachovia Center in front of 10,542 fans.

Bergery and Athan Iannucci (three assists) each had four goals for the Wings (3-0). Geoff Snider (two goals), Jamie Rooney (two goals, one assist), Merrick Thomson (one, four), Dan Marohl (one, three), Taylor Wray (one, one) also scored for the Wings.

Mark Steenhuis led the Bandits (2-2) with four goals, one assist.

Phantoms

Jeff Tambellini scored a shorthanded goal with 47.5 seconds left in regulation and Mike Morrison blanked the Phantoms in the shootout to give host Bridgeport (23-22-1-0) a 4-3 shootout win on Saturday night.

Jonathan Matsumoto scored twice for the Phantoms (29-15-1-2), whohost the Worcester Sharks Friday at 7:05 p.m. *
