Letters: Odd vision of Council's service role

COUNCILMAN Bill Greenlee really misses the boat when it comes to constituent service (op-ed, "Constituent Service part of Council's Job," Oct. 29).

If city government worked well - if Council demanded of mayors that government be more responsive to the service needs of its citizens - Philadelphians wouldn't need to go to Councils member for help; they could go directly to the office that provides the service they need.

Council doesn't want to make city services accessible without its own intervention because if they are, Council members wouldn't be able to ask voters to return the favor with a vote come election time.

If this is Mr. Greenlee's idea of what being a Council member is all about, maybe the city is better off with him as a member of a Council staff rather than a member of Council itself.

Joseph Steinbock, Marlton, N.J.

city council is an $18 million dollar a year joke. why are council even needed when there are voting machines that cost alot less and can't hire thier friends and family, that can do the same job cheaper and more efficent?

Regarding the comment: "...if Council demanded of mayors that government be more responsive to the service needs of its citizens - Philadelphians wouldn't need to go to Councils member for help; they could go directly to the office that provides the service they need...", I agree with the sentiment, but shouldn't it actually be punctuated as "Council's member" or instead say "a council member"? I wonder if the newspaper made this error; as a regular Steinbock reader, I find him to be very careful and accurate (to a fault, almost) about proper punctuation.
