Daily News endorsements: Seth Williams for District Attorney & Alan Butkovitz for Controller

IN 18 YEARS at the helm, Lynne Abraham has been an able administrator, a relentless crime fighter and a passionate advocate for victims. Her successor must be smart enough to adopt her best practices while coming up with new methods to deal with problems that we can't resolve with traditional approaches.

Seth Williams is our clear choice for district attorney.

He would build on the strong working relationships among the D.A., the police and the U.S. Attorney's Office. And he won't be hampered by the friction that sometimes exists between Abraham and criminal-court judges.

Williams' 10 years of experience as a prosecutor and administrator in the D.A.'s office is invaluable. His experience as city inspector general should lead to a more vigorous approach to prosecuting municipal corruption than during Abraham's tenure.

CHARGED WITH investigating how efficiently taxpayer money is spent, the office of controller is among the most critical in the city.

We need a controller who is independent enough of the system to challenge it, but is familiar enough with the system to change it.

Our endorsement goes to Alan Butkovitz.

We've had our beefs with Butkovitz in the past, but his "gotcha" reports have decreased, and over the last year, he has focused more on the job at hand. And he offers compelling testimony for why he should continue in the job.

Butkovitz is smart, and not afraid to be unpopular.

Those are important strengths, and they could raise his game even higher if he better communicated his rationale for selecting departments for audits and got aggressive about finding money for more audits and reviews. *

You dummies couldn't be more wrong-headed about these two endorsements. One wants to be chief social worker instead of DA, and the other cannot carry out the provisions of the job he's been elected to do, so you want to reward him with another term? Great. Your opinions are relegated to the trash heap where they belong.

you screwed up on controller. I'm guessing that any 'D' could be running for the position and you would have endorsed them. Congratulations on your part in keeping the mess in the City consistent.

No wonder this city is broke and crime ridden. I'm a progressive and even I know these two are hacks.

So you endorse a controller that never monitored The NTI funds.

OMG, the editors at the DN need to lay off the ganja. Seriously? The two fools who represent a microcosm of what is wrong with the city? Bring on the lenders, because local control is a failure.

What a sick, infected, subjugated party sheet this paper is. Dems are bad here because of such partisan blindness. The losers are the city's most vulnerable to the corruption, theft, graft, and lack of innovation in the most moribund part of the Democratic party in the country. It forces me to vote GOP in all things PA. Or Green, where possible.

Wake up Philadelphia. A Republican controler is what this city needs to shake up the Democratic machine. ....and fyi...I'm a liberal Democrat and will be voting straight Republican. The Democratic corrupt machine needs to be broken and rebalanced with Republicans.

"We need a controller who is independent enough of the system to challenge it" FAIL. Butko is a Democrat ward leader, in a position that he requires Democrats (it's a one party town) to be honest. "but is familiar enough with the system to change it." So only a political insider can do this job?

We need real reform and change in this city, not more of the status quo. These endorsements are a joke.

Seth's the next DA...Dems outnumbers Repubs in this city so bad its ridiculous. The messages he's sending though...compassion, understanding, sympathy, are code words, and we all know what they're code words for: light sentences, a voilent city. I just hope...heh...he's just playing brilliant game to get the votes from...certain areas...then he'll turn out to be alright. If these messages of compassion are for real...sigh...its finally time to say goodbye to Philly...the inner city is already too dangerous (after sunset, when it COUNTS; everywhere is safe at sunrise...). If thugs KNOW in advance that they can committ acts of violence even in the safe havens, and get back out in 3 years by playing the "compassion" game...

We already know your endorsing these two clowns. How many more articles do you need to post on this same topic?? It's amusing you think your endorsement still matters.
