Days at the races

GOV. RENDELL is fuming at state legislators at their delay in passing a law that would expand gambling to include table games. At issue: how much tax to charge gaming companies for the privilege of expanding their reach into their customers' wallets. While the "debate" rages, state payments to schools and hospitals are being held up.

That's outrageous. But it pales compared to one of the arguments made recently against table games. The Pennsylvania Equine Coalition testified to a gaming oversight committe in August that table games would harm the horse-racing industry by diluting slots revenues.

The act legalizing slots was originally designed to aid the state's horse-racing industry. And the Race Horse Development Fund has gotten $419 million of the $3 billion in slots revenues. That ain't exactly hay.

In fact, isn't it time to ask, now the the industry has been saved, whether they should get a smaller share of the pie? *

Kearney
Once table games are up and running the horse-racing industry will be over in Pennsylvania. Look what happed to Liberty Bell Park racetrack, Brandywine racetrack, Garden State racetrack, Atlantic City racetrack when casinos opened up in Atlantic City. They were completely unarmed to compete against the casino 24/7 gambling, Free booze, Check cashing, Interest Free Credit and the Comping that makes many justify their losses. Go to any horse racing track in our state and you will see very few patrons under the age of fifty. The only way the horse racing industry might have a shot in today’s gambling world, would be for them to go to a Ben- Hur theme, with chariots, and spears. Today’s gamblers and future gamblers are not going to wait for a horse to worm up and then run around in a circle to get there gambling fix. Comparing horse racing gambling to casino gambling is like comparing marijuana to crack cocaine. To learn more about my credentials on this subject go on line and look up Bill Kearney on casino gambling.
