Letters: 'Oh, dem golden plates . . .'

Let's step up to the plate and hit a home run for the Mummers. The great institution that brings all of us together can use the dough. So - here's how to put them on a vanity plate.

It's simple. First have a contest to design the tag - then get them made.

Under PennDOT guidelines, the specialty-plate program allows approved organizations to advocate their interests, charge a fee above the regualr fee and provide for a distinctive license plate.

Specialty plates are manufactured in our standard plate colors - blue, white and yellow. The organization's name appears across the bottom of the plate and "Pennsylvania" is printed across the top of the plate. A 3"-by-3" area on the left side displays the organization's emblem or logo using graphic printing that offers color and intricacy of detail.

To qualify, an organization must be a nonprofit organization, have as one of its primary purposes service to the community that results in a contribution to the welfare of others, be based in Pennsylvania and not be offensive in purpose, nature, activity or name.

When they are sold, a predetermined percentage can go to the Mummers. (They can sure use it.)

And then you can also show everyone who's tailgating you how proud you are to be a Philadelphian.
