Letters: More on Council & the Shore thing

AFTER reading Councilman Jim Kenney's letter "The 'Beach View' from City Hall," I wonder why he was so defensive. During the summer, many Philadelphians travel to the Shore to relax and unwind. I see the councilman quite often at the local gym in North Wildwood.

And while. Kenney might not have a "beach view" from his office, he can see the beach from his Shore home. Maybe we can get the whole crew's E-ZPass records so we can see how often they're working.

Fumo's just desserts

Ex-Sen. Fumo facing 20-27 years in prison is ridiculous! More money was spent prosecuting him than he took. I wish these prosecutors were as tenacious when going after the murderous criminals we really want off the street.

The good he did for Pennsylvania can't be denied. A $1 million fine and probation is fine with me.

Gary Papa's strength

Gary Papa was as tough as any athlete he ever interviewed. His battle with cancer will be an inspiration to all of us for many years to come. I would echo the sentiments of many viewers who are grateful to Channel 6 for allowing Gary to do the job he loved so much right up until the final days of his life.

Defending city workers

My husband works for the city, which shouldn't be trying to take anything back. The only reason people take a job with the city is for the pension and benefits. And, most important, job security. They don't take these jobs for the pay; you can make more on the outside.

There's much more to city workers than what people see on the street. How'd you feel if there was no one to work on fire and police equipment?

Blue perils

Six city cops hurt in accidents by intoxicated drivers. One in serious condition, another with a face full of stitches. The other four are OK, thank God. What a perilous job these people have.

Where hate comes from

A man of German descent who hated Jews and blacks went to a museum that reminds us of a Holocaust he thought never happened and shot a black guard.

That's no different from someone who disagrees with abortion murdering a doctor who was an usher serving his God in his church. It's the same as people who wave signs saying God hates gays (like they know how God feels) and terrorists who fly airplanes into buildings.

You're not born that way. You have to be taught. Heredity and environment. Nature and nurture. Hate, fear, ignorance, and intolerance are learned from society, family and religion. They cause racism, sexism, abuse of women and children, cruelty to animals and homophobia.

With all the evil, there also has to be good in the universe. Are we part of the problem, or part of the solution?
