Fuelproof Your Summer

Pedal to the metal

As gasoline prices have risen, motorists don't have to reinvent the wheel to solve their commuting woes. They can just use different ones.

A bicycle is a no-fuel, low-maintenance form of transportation that people have used for decades, said Jon Newton, 24, sales manager at the Bicycle Therapy bike shop on South Street near 22nd.

"There's kind of a reason why the design hasn't changed in like 80 years," he said.

Newton said that the bike industry has experienced an increase in sales in response to rising gasoline prices. Along with customers who want bikes for recreational purposes, many customers come to the store to find a bike to commute around the city, he said.

Bikes are the fastest way to get around Center City on weekdays, according to a report released by the Center City District in February.

Patricia Dominguez, 24, has been pedaling to work since she graduated from college two years ago.

"Every time I have ever driven downtown I have gotten a parking ticket…I'm so over it," Dominguez said.

Dominguez rides more than 12 miles a day, most of the time from her home in Upper Darby to either of her two jobs or to an internship. However, using a bike is not always a ride in the park, Dominguez said.
