John Hatcher, ironworker, welder

John R. Hatcher, operator of the J. Hatcher Iron Shop, at 1718 N. 44th St., died of heart failure Jan. 27. He was 78 and lived in West Philadelphia.

He was born in Philadelphia to Ida M. and William Moses Hatcher and attended Bok Vocational High School. He was an ironworker and welder before starting his own business.

"He was a friendly, sociable man who liked a good game of pool," said his brother, Carl Hatcher.

Besides his brother, he is survived by two daughters, Sheila and Stacey Hatcher; a sister, Theresa Saddler; and his former wife, Elizabeth Braxton. He was predeceased by a son, John.

Services: 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Julian V. Hawkins Funeral Home, 5307 Haverford Ave. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Chelten Hills Cemetery, Washington Lane and Woolston Avenue.
