Obama, Dems say health plan is a go

WASHINGTON - Buoyed by two major endorsements, House Democratic leaders yesterday predicted swift passage of President Obama's historic health overhaul initiative. The president himself declared, "We are closer to passing this reform than ever before."

With a vote set for tomorrow, momentum gathered behind the sweeping legislation to remake the U.S. health-care system and extend coverage to millions of the uninsured. The American Medical Association and the powerful seniors' lobby AARP both threw their weight behind the bill yesterday. AARP, with its 40 million members, promised to run ads and contact activists to gin up support.

"I urge Congress to listen to AARP, listen to the AMA, and pass this reform for hundreds of millions of Americans who will benefit from it," Obama told reporters during an unannounced visit to the White House briefing room after the endorsements were announced.

At the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, Democrats were listening.

"We are right on the brink," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "We have an historic opportunity for us to again provide quality health care for all Americans. It is something that many of us have worked our whole political lifetimes on."

Who are the "hundreds of millions" of Americans who will benefit from it? My understanding of this us that it will allow for an additional 10 or 15 million people to be covered at an expense if $1.2 trillion dollars. I'm no math guru, but wouldn it just be cheaper to give each of those 10 or 15 million people a $5-10 tax credit based on need so that they can purchase a plan if their choosing? That would allow the 75+% of Americans who are happy with their current coverage to keep it. Then we can ficus on truly reducing costs. Tort reform, allowing competition across stare lines, a la cart plans that don't require outrageous levels of minimum coverage, catastrophic plans for young and healthy people, group purchasing power for small business owners, etc ....Oh wait, this was never about lowering the cost of healthcare, was it? It was never about choice was it?

Corrections: I meant $5-10k tax credits and "focus" not "ficus". I should proof read. But then, so should the President. There is NO WAY that hundreds of millions of Americans come out better off at the end of this if this bill passes. 5% of Americans will actually be better off, the rest of us will be worse off, healthcare costs will not go down and the government will be dug deeper in to our lives. Thanks Washington! Another demonstration of incompetence on a massive scale.

People are sick, especially those on the right. Nobody whined when the Bush administration handed Pakistan $15 Billion in "aid" over 10 years and Pakistan harbors the terrorists that are killing our troops. In fact, nobody uttered a word about it. Yet people whine and bellyache about offering health care to their own country men and women. How unpatriotic. Funny thing is, they'll only whine and bellyache for the free competition of health care insurance companies until they cherry pick all of the young and healthy people and leave seniors and people with pre-existing conditions left out in the cold. Then they'll want their government option.

gl My family left a communist country over 40 years ago and made this great country our home. We came legally and took nothing from the government. My parents worked hard and gave us a modest life. The greatest thing about this country is the opportunity it gives to those who want to make something of themselves if they so choose. Why should those who are responsible have to carry the load for others. This government is making the American people take something they don't want. This is a true example of what a socialist/communist system does.

Longshanks at every opportunity you display your incredible ignorance of what conservatives believe. You ASSUME I supported the $15 billion in aid to Pakistan. I did not. You vilify anyone who would deny their fellow americans health care. I would not deny them healthcare. If you wipe the left wing agenda out of your eyes, I said lets give them $5k-$10k tax credits to purchase their own then focus on getting the costs down in ways that will truly work. As for cherrypicking the young and healthy? Where is that in my comment? Pre-existing conditions? They go right out the window if you allow small businesses to band together to purchase health coverage. It's called spreading the risk. When an individual tries to buy a policy and they have CHF for instance, the insurance company knows they are going to pay out more than they will ever collect in premiums for that one person and it is a bad BUSINESS decision. Remember, they are running a business not a charity. If that same person is part of a group of people that buy insurance, the risk is manageable and the company can spread the risk out over all policy holders. Your savior of choice, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, is currently keeping any of the changes I suggested from happening. Your doom and gloom description of seniors and those with pre existing conditions being left out in the cold doesn't hold up on anyt legitimate scrutiny. You see the gov't as the solution. I say that if you look deep enough, you'll find that they have created most of the problems. Let yhe government manage your life, but don't expect me to come along for the ride willingly. It's called freedom. I forgot, libs are willing to trade freedom for security and the warm embrace of massive government.

gl, longshanks doesn't care what you know or where you came from. And he doesn't believe that people are capable of making their way in life through hard work and self reliance. the deck is stacked against him and everyone like him. any of us who have achieved any level of success or the American dream must have cheated and therefore our wealth and property to should be redistributed to make life "fair". I'm starting to see his point of view. I'm quittting my job and getting on the dole.
