Feds drop Barry charge

WASHINGTON - Federal prosecutors have dropped stalking charges against former Washington Mayor Marion Barry.

U.S. Park Police arrested the D.C. councilman on Saturday after they said that a woman complained that she was being stalked.

Barry's lawyer said that Barry was arrested on the way home from a meal with the woman, Donna Watts-Brighthaupt. Watts-Brighthaupt earlier this week also released a statement that appeared to deny that she had accused him of stalking.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said yesterday that it would not pursue the stalking charges after reviewing evidence.

Barry served four terms as mayor. He was videotaped in 1990 smoking crack cocaine in an FBI sting but later regained the mayor's office. *
