1CHESTER POLICE FIND

MAN IN TRUNK

Chester police said they found a beaten man in the trunk of his own car early yesterday.

Police received a call about 1:45 a.m. of a report of a person being beaten and thrown into the trunk of a green Cadillac on 11th Street near Harwick, according to a police news release.

Police found the car a block away, on 12th Street near Harwick, and heard a banging noise coming from the trunk as they approached.

When cops were able to get the trunk open, they found the owner of the car, a Chester resident, inside. He had facial swelling and several cuts, police said. He told authorities that he had been assaulted by two black men who were dressed all in black, according to the release. Police gave no indication of a motive for the crime.

2ALLEGED BABY-KILLER ARRESTED

Police have arrested a Northeast Philadelphia man in the death of his girlfriend's 18-month-old child.

Edward Drayton, 20, of Blue Grass Road near Gregg Street, was charged with murder, endangering the welfare of a child and related offenses in Saturday's death of Samari Campbell, police said.

An autopsy showed that the child had died of multiple blunt-force trauma. Court records show that Drayton had been arrested twice before as an adult on charges involving drugs, receiving stolen property and the unauthorized use of a vehicle; neither of those arrests resulted in convictions.

3MAN SHOT IN NORTHEAST

An 18-year-old man was shot and wounded early yesterday on Roosevelt Boulevard near Bustleton Avenue, in Northeast Philadelphia, police said. The victim was found with a gunshot wound

to the arm, cops said.

He was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

The suspect in the shooting is described as a black man, age 20-21, about 5 feet 10, 190 pounds, and goes by the name of Colin. Tipsters can contact Northeast Detectives at 215-686-3153.

UPDATE: CHARGES UPHELD

IN DISABLED MAN'S DEATH

A judge upheld involuntary-manslaughter charges against a counselor who allegedly left a disabled client in a blazing-hot van after a group outing at Sesame Place.

A defense attorney for Stacey Strauss, 40, of Northeast Philadelphia, argued that a "systemwide failure" at Woods Services led to the death of Bryan Nevins, of New York.

Police said that Strauss left the severely autistic Nevins in the van when the group returned to the Langhorne campus from Sesame Place.

They say she also made conflicting statements after his body was found.

Defense lawyers argue that many co-workers share blame for the death.

The nonprofit Woods Services serves about 1,400 clients from several states at facilities in Bucks County.
