Woman gives baby to stranger

A pedestrian on the streets of North Philadelphia was given something invaluable Saturday morning by a stranger who no longer wanted it: a baby.

A pedestrian on the streets of North Philadelphia was given something invaluable Saturday morning by a stranger who no longer wanted it: a baby.

Police said the unidentified person was approached by a woman on Lawrence Street near Indiana Avenue around 8:20 a.m. The woman gave the stranger her 3-month-old Hispanic son and then walked away.

The abandoned baby was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children to be examined and was found to be in good condition, police said.

The Special Victim's Unit is investigating the incident and the child's mother may have been identified, although that could not be confirmed last night. The Department of Human Services has also been notified, police said.

Under Pennsylvania's Safe Haven Law, parents can leave babies up to 28 days old at a hospital without the fear of criminal prosecution.
