Boardwalk fire hits 3 shops
A rapidly spreading fire that started in a pizza shop on the Atlantic City Boardwalk Saturday night swept through three other stores before firefighters could bring it under control.
Fire officials said the blaze broke out shortly before 7 p.m. in the pizza shop on the Central Pier and spread to two clothing stores and a photography shop. It took firefighters four hours to bring it under control. No serious injuries were reported.
2 boaters rescued after fire
The Coast Guard rescued two people Saturday evening after the boat they were aboard caught fire five miles east of Manasquan Inlet.
The Coast Guard received a call at 6:35 p.m. from a crewmember of the Finally reporting that their boat was on fire, they were abandoning ship and getting into a life raft. A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Shark River, N.J., arrived on scene and rescued the two, who were transferred to awaiting emergency medical personnel.
Schools can get students' priors
New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has signed a measure that gives high school administrators in the state access to adult students' criminal histories. The bill requires that principals be made aware when any high school student 18 or older is charged with certain criminal offenses. And if a student 18 or older transfers, the old school must share criminal records with the new school.
Chase leads to Pa. man's arrest
Christopher E. Murphy, 30, of Horsham, has been charged with numerous criminal offenses after leading police on a high-speed chase injuring two Maryland State Police troopers on the Capital Beltway.
Police say Murphy is charged with attempted murder,assault and traffic offenses. State police say the troopers were pursuing an erratic driver Saturday in Prince George's County when the suspect swerved into the side of a patrol car. That car hit another cruiser, and both patrol cars spun out of control. Another vehicle also was struck.
