Harry Gross: Not mixing business with politics

Dear Harry: Your voice has been one of common sense and reasoned opinions. I would love to see you get more involved in the national debates going on in Washington, particularly the one on health care. I have always thought that insurance was an economic miracle. It allows the costs to be spread among many for the costs incurred by the few. And in life insurance, it provides payment for widows and orphans of those who die young and for other uses when people live long. Car insurance, homeowners, disability insurance, unemployment insurance, etc., are all helpful and necessary for the economic success of our society. I am at a total loss to understand why there is such an outcry against health insurance when other risks are so efficiently mitigated by insurance. I have not seen any discussion of the cost to society of having so many people uninsured for health care. The real cost is the productivity and taxes lost when people do not get needed care and become a substantial burden to society. If they got the needed care, many would be genuine assets to society. I await your observations and opinions.

What Harry says: This column is an attempt to help those who have financial or economic questions of a personal nature. Certainly, questions of government policy and debate do arise, and I respond to them as they affect the individual involved. On occasion, I do write an op-ed column on issues that I feel are overlooked or are very disturbing to me. Although I have some very strong political views, my effectiveness in this space would be compromised by my expressing them. Thanks for your input.

There is not an "outcry against health insurance". There is an outcry against government running it. Government rarely if ever runs anything well or efficiently. Also insurance like car insurance comes into play when something tragic happens like an accident. It doesn't pay for oil changes and regular maintenance. Health "insurance" has been corrupted into covering everything under the sun that has to do with anything medical care. Finally, the plans passed in Congress do nothing to "reform" the system. You can't have "reform" without doing something about malpractice, but the Big Law and the trial lawyers have paid off the Democrats to stay away from it so they are the only business that is unscathed by this so-called "reform".

Back in the 60s, there was true "health care" insurance. Blue Cross paid if you were hospitalized; Blue Shield covered emergency room care. All other medical care -- doctor's visits, labs, x-rays, etc. -- were paid out-of-pocket on a pay-as-you-go basis. Those medical care costs were very low compared to today's costs. You could shop around for the best price, and payment plans were often available in large urban areas. Then the manufacturers decided providing health care coverage to union members was a good way to get around paying higher salaries and retirement benefits. And look where we are now. Other industrialized first world countries came around long ago to the fact that a healthy populace was a productive populace, and a tax-paying populace. I guess the people of the United States of America are ignorant, self-centered, and hate-filled against "other" people to understand that concept.
