Man arrested in alleged rape, crash in Northeast

Police have arrested a man who allegedly raped a woman, then crashed his car and left behind his damaged vehicle.

Special Victims Unit investigators also were searching for three other men, who, in an unrelated incident, allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl behind an Olney Regional Rail platform Saturday night.

In the first case, a 21-year-old woman was at a party on Keystone Street near Cheltenham Avenue, in Northeast Philadelphia, when she called a cab for a ride home, police said.

A 31-year-old man who was also at the party allegedly overheard the woman's phone call and offered to give her a ride home, police said.

The woman did not know the man but accepted his offer, said Lt. Al Rossi, of the Special Victims Unit.

During the ride, the man pulled over on Ditman Street near Levick about 5:50 a.m. and allegedly raped the woman in the car.

It's unclear whether he forced the woman from his car or she was able to struggle free on her own, but the man drove off alone, then hit at least three parked cars on Hegerman Street near Devereaux, Rossi said.

His vehicle was so severely damaged that it could not be driven and he ran off, police said.

Authorities later identified Jose Miranda as the suspect from his left-behind car and the victim's description, an investigator said last night.

Miranda was arrested at his home on G Street near Westmoreland without incident about 3 p.m. and charged with rape, indecent assault, aggravated assault and related offenses, police said.

In the second sexual assault this weekend, a 14-year-old girl who was walking home from the Olney shopping plaza was abducted by three men at Mascher Street and Tabor Road about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Rossi said.

The assailants, one of whom had a silver handgun, took her to a grassy area behind the platform for SEPTA's R8 Regional Rail line where at least one of them raped her, police said.

The men allegedly fled on foot and the girl was able to ask a passer-by to call police.

The victim was taken to Episcopal Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Investigators said that they hope that video-surveillance footage from nearby businesses and the SEPTA platform may provide clues to the identity of the attackers.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to called the Special Victims Unit at 215-685-3251.
