Coast Guard search to continue today for man whose boat capsized near Marcus Hook

The Coast Guard yesterday suspended rescue efforts for a 21-year-old Lansdowne man who vanished early yesterday when the boat he was aboard capsized in the Delaware River near Marcus Hook.

An aircrew and a boat crew searched for Joel Arizza until about 4 p.m. yesterday, and the New Jersey State Police will resume the recovery operation today, said Petty Officer Chris McLaughlin, a Coast Guard spokesman.

McLaughlin said Arizza and another boater, Kevin Kelly, were aboard the 15-foot pleasure boat about 2 a.m. yesterday when the boat apparently flipped over.

"It didn't sink completely, but it was submerged and capsized," he said.

Kelly swam to the Flower Street boat ramp in Chester, but Arizza decided to stay with the boat, McLaughlin said. Kelly was transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for observation.

McLaughlin said it was unclear yesterday why the two men were on the river at that hour or what caused the boat to capsize.

Arizza, the brother of a state trooper, was not believed to have been wearing a life jacket.
