Cop injured during struggle with teen in Northeast
An officer who stopped two teens whom he suspected of violating the city curfew early yesterday suffered a head injury when one of the teens wrestled him to the ground, police said.
Both boys fled the scene but were found and charged with aggravated assault and related offenses, police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore said.
The 49-year-old officer from the 15th District, headquartered at Levick Street and Harbison Avenue in the Northeast, suffered a head laceration. He was treated at Aria Health's Torresdale campus and released.
The officer was on patrol in his cruiser in Frankford about 2 a.m. when he saw the teens at Tackawanna and Foulkrod streets.
As he got out of his car, he saw one of the teens, a 17-year-old, toss an object that he believed to be a weapon, Vanore said.
He called for backup and began to question the teens, police said. When the 17-year-old moved toward the object he had discarded, the cop engaged him in a struggle.
The other teen, a 16-year-old, ran off while the 17-year-old and the cop struggled to the ground, where the officer hit his head, becoming "dazed and unable to even get up," Vanore said.
The 17-year-old then fled on foot, police said.
When backup arrived, officers found the discarded object, later determined to be a pellet gun.
Both teens were nabbed in their homes a block from the scene about 6:30 a.m., police said.
