4 dead in crash on I-95

Four people were killed on Interstate-95 yesterday after the car in which they were driving collided and slid under a tractor-trailer, ejecting one person.

The accident occurred about 1:30 a.m. when the driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer lost control of the car as it traveled south on the highway between Allegheny and Girard avenues, according to a state police report.

The driver, who authorities said kept changing lanes while at a high rate of speed, suddenly turned the wheel to the right, sending the car toward the rig.

The left front of the Lancer slid 10 feet under the left rear of the trailer, which had been traveling in the same direction.

Moments later, the car dislodged from the truck and continued to spin around, throwing one of the passengers from the car, before stopping just south of the off-ramp at Girard Avenue, police said.

All four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Three of the passengers and the truck driver were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident, police said. The truck driver was uninjured.

When reached at his home in Abingdon, Md., the driver, Frank Maier, 57, said he was "tired" before hanging up the phone.

The names of the dead had not yet been released yesterday afternoon.

The crash snarled traffic for several hours. It is being investigated by the State Police Belmont Barracks.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to call 215-560-6199.
