Man shot in Olney
A man was ambushed and shot at 3rd Street and Olney Avenue, Olney, about 10 a.m. yesterday, police said. The victim, whom police did not identify, was struck six times in the back, arm and leg. He was in critical condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Shooting victim ID'd
Police yesterday identified a man killed Thursday in a double-shooting in West Philadelphia as Kevin Hubbard, 19 of 56th Street near Thompson. He was found bleeding from a chest wound near his home about 2:40 p.m., police said. He had been shot during an apparent argument. He died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at 3:29 p.m. Another 19-year-old was listed in stable condition at HUP with an abdominal wound, police said. Investigators believe that both victims were shot in the same incident.
Puerto Rican Day Parade
The Puerto Rican Day Parade kicks off tomorrow at 11 a.m. at 16th Street and Ben Franklin Parkway. The parade will proceed west on the Parkway to the reviewing stand near 22nd Street. The Parkway will be closed to traffic between 16th and 22nd streets, but cross traffic will be allowed on the numbered streets, except 16th.
$22M housing grant
The Philadelphia Housing Authority yesterday announced freceipt of $22 million in federal stimulus grants to build low-rise apartments in Mantua and to improve disability access to four PHA housing developments. The announcement came just five days after a $13.9 million grant was awarded to rebuild the 43-year-old Paschall Apartments in Southwest Philadelphia.
Slay victim's kin pleads guilty
A nephew of a businessman slain during a home-invasion robbery in Montgomery County has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and other charges.
Prosecutors say Angelo Shin, 25, of North Wales, set things in motion by telling several Philadelphia men about large amounts of cash that his uncle, Robert Chae, 58, kept in his home. Prosecutors say Shin expected to be paid $2,000. Chae and his wife were leaving for work at their a beauty-supply business in Suburban Station, Center City, when they were ambushed in their driveway Jan. 9. Chae was bound with duct tape, and suffocated, prosecutors say.
Prescriptions hijacked
Three men yesterday hijacked a truck carrying prescription drugs in an alley behind the Upper Darby Pharmacy, on Long Lane near Sansom Street, police said. The driver was briefly kidnapped and released in Southwest Philadelphia. Tipsters can call 610-734- 7693.
