He admits guilt in homicide
Anthony Butler, 39, of Darby, pleaded guilty in Wilmington yesterday to criminally negligent homicide, shortly before opening statements were to begin in his murder trial.
Butler had been charged in the slaying of Maurice Goodman, whose body was found Oct. 15, 2007, in the trunk of a rental car in Philadelphia.
She gets 25 yrs. for kid porn
Concetta Jackson, 47, of Collingdale, Delaware County, was sentenced yesterday to 25 years in prison for producing child pornography.
Prosecutors say Jackson, who ran a babysitting service out of her home, turned kids over to her ex-boyfriend, John Jackey Woman, who videotaped his sexual abuse of the children, including a 6-week old baby. Worman received a life sentence last month.
Car hits, kills woman, 81, in NE
An 81-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car in Northeast Philadelphia last night, police said. The victim, whose name was not released, was hit as she tried to cross Red Lion Road near Verree at 6:25 p.m. She died shortly after at Aria Hospital-Torresdale. Police said charges were not filed against the driver, who stopped at the scene.
SEPTA staging an 'Elebration'
SEPTA will hold an information briefing at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at the 46th Street station of the Market Street Elevated Line to give details of the newly completed reconstruction of the 12.9-mile line. Immediately following the briefing, the "Elebration" will celebrate the completion of the project. A 100-year-old structure was replaced and six new stations were built.
A resource center for parents
The School District's Parent & Community Resource Center, at 440 N. Broad St., is now open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. to assist parents with issues of transportation, student placement, food services, early-childhood education, alternative education and any other issue that may be pending for the new school year.
Extra staff will be available and parents in need of language services will also have access to the district's Translation and Interpretation Center.
It's a SCORE! - for nursery
The Philadelphia Laborers-Employers Cooperation Education Trust of the Laborers' District Council of the Metropolitan Area of Philadelphia and Vicinity has donated its luxury suite at the Wachovia Center for a Philadelphia Flyers game to Jenkintown Day Nursery, a nonprofit organization dedicated to early-childhood education and care for families in need.
The nursery will raffle off the luxury box at its annual Rags & Riches fundraising event Nov. 7 at the Thunderbird Lanes, in Willow Grove.
Zoo gets 2 special donkeys
The Philadelphia Zoo welcomes a new addition - Poitou donkeys. The two females joining the zoo's collection from the Hamilton Rare Breeds Foundation, in Vermont, are Nike, 6, and Periwinkle, 8. These donkeys are unique - at more than 6 feet from hoof to ear, they are among the largest donkeys in the world. They are known for their long, dreadlocked coats.
