No parole for repeat violent offenders? Not so fast, critics warn

Upper Darby cops nab alleged playground shooter, despite lack of help from witnesses

Aaron Kearney took a bullet for his friend in front of 100 people on an Upper Darby playground in May, authorities said.

But not one of those 100 took a stand for Kearney by cooperating with police, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

On Friday, despite the lack of assistance, authorities arrested one of two men believed to be responsible for the killing.

Thomas "Nef" Gregory, 21, was taken into custody without incident at his home in Asbury Park, N.J., police said.

Along with murder and related offenses, Gregory was also charged with possession with the intent to deliver crack cocaine after a search of his home revealed he was in possession of the drug, police said.

Now, Chitwood is giving a warning to the other suspect, Taaqi "Fame" Brown, 20, who remains on the lam.

"He shouldn't sleep at night," Chitwood said, "because his door's going to come crashing in."

The shooting occurred at about 5 p.m. on May 2 at the Second Ward Playground, near Greenwood and Crosley avenues, in Upper Darby's Stonehurst section.

Police believed that Gregory and Brown were angry about drugs being stolen from a Long Lane stash house and believed that Kearney's friend was responsible, Chitwood said.

A verbal and physical argument, in which Kearney, 19, helped to defend his friend, escalated to a point where a total of 11 shots were fired by one of the alleged assailants. However, only Kearney was injured. He died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The following week, Kearney's funeral at the Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, in King of Prussia, descended into chaos when the intended target - whom Kearney died protecting - showed up, police said.

More than 100 people were running around the cemetery, with about 30 of them fighting, police said at the time. One man was arrested for a gun violation.

Gregory was charged with murder, aggravated assault and related charges and remains in prison, without bail. *
